Siparia
Deltones to
perform and
conduct
steelpan
workshops
for Canadian
students
Siparia
Deltones on
Panorama
Finals
night, 2006
- San
Fernando,
Trinidad,
W.I.
Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I.
– The
Siparia
Deltones
Steel
Orchestra
will perform
for
audiences
totaling
approximately
40,000 in
Canada next
month. They
will perform
at the
Barrie
Caribbean
Festival (Caribfest)
and will
also be the
featured
guests at
the One
World
International
Drumming
Festival.
The Trinidad
and Tobago
Entertainment
Company
Limited (T&T
Ent) has
helped to
support the
Orchestra’s
two-month
stay that
will include
performances
and workshop
facilitation.
This comes
on the heels
of the Love
Circle’s
tour of
Kenya and
the European
Tour both of
which
received
funding from
T&T Ent.
The Steel
Orchestra
has been
invited by
the
Caribbean
Culture
Institute in
Barrie,
Ontario to
perform at
two large
events that
will
highlight
the
dexterity
and wonder
of the
steelpan.
The
orchestra
will also
conduct a
series of
workshops
for
approximately
100 Canadian
students
during the
six weeks of
a Steel Pan
Music camp.
The
President of
the Brampton
Community
All Steel
Percussion
Concert
Band visited the Siparia
Deltones
during the
2009
carnival
period. He
was so
impressed
with the
Siparia
Deltones’
curriculum
and pan
education
methodology,
that the
format of
the Steel
Pan Music
Camp in
Canada was
modeled
around the
program of
the Deltones
Pan School.
The workshop
series will
include
elements of
steelpan
history,
awareness
and
maintenance,
making of
the
steelpan,
steelpan
playing
techniques,
the science
of music,
performance
and
steelband
arranging.
The
workshops
will be the
pilot for a
Pan in
Schools
initiative
in Canada. Over twenty
members of
the
orchestra
will make
the trip to
Canada - the
majority of
whom are
still in
their
teenage
years. The
similarity
in age of
members of
the Siparia
Deltones and
the Canadian
students
will help to
facilitate
the learning
process.
The Siparia
Deltones
Steel
Orchestra
was
established
in 1962 by
pan pioneer
Ellis
Knights.
The musical
director is
the well
known
Carlton
‘Zanda’
Alexander
who has been
the driving
force behind
the band’s
music
direction
for the past
fifteen
years. The
Orchestra is
comprised
mainly of
students
carefully
selected
from their
music
school.
For the 2009
Trinidad &
Tobago
Panorama
competition
season, the
orchestra
made the
leap from
the small
conventional
steel
orchestra
category,
directly to
that of the
large,
giving a
very
competitive
performance
of
Alexander’s
musical
arrangement.
They placed
seventh
overall in
the
championship
round on
Finals
night.
