France - Many times in the arts you come
across talent and work that are so compelling that words are
not needed, and language is not a barrier. Indeed such
is the case with the work of
François Lachèze.
François, who is a steelpan lover and former pan player has graciously agreed to
allow When Steel Talks (WST) to spotlight his work, passion and love
for the steelpan artform
through his images.
François told WST that he played six
bass with Calypsociation steel orchestra in Paris from
2000 to 2005, but that he is no longer a player
because he found it personally
challenging as he grew older to keep up
with the rigors of music memorization. François went on to say
“I’m still in Calypsociation,
[as] one of their artists 4
making pictures ’n visuals,” and added that he still enjoyed
stints in the band’s Engine Room and
being an extremely passionate lover of
the band’s music, and of steelband music
in general.
The steelpan images of François capture
a wide range of panists universal
experiences - culture and emotions -
including humor, sacrifice, unity and
struggle.
