Steelpan Notables in the Spotlight

Trinidad and Tobago - Last evening (December 20) the Music Literacy Trust honored Bobby Mohammed of Guinness Cavaliers, steel panist and composer Ken “Professor” Philmore and Mark Loquan for their work in composing and/or arranging some of the nation’s finest pieces of music.

The Trust donated to all tertiary level educational institutions musical scores of the work of Mohammed, Philmore and Loquan.  Ms. Gonzales of COSTAATT (The College of Science, Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad and Tobago), Mr. Flax of APA-UTT (Academy for the Performing Arts/University of Trinidad and Tobago) and Jessel Murray of Sinfonia/NSSO/UWI (National Steel Symphony Orchestra /University of the West Indies) were on hand to received the scores. A number of special invited guests attend the event. The guests were treated to performances by steelpan player, arranger and composer Ray Holman and Philmore... a very warming and unique experience.

Presented in CD format, each CD contained, the musical score on either Sibelius or Finale, a midi file, a pdf of the score, the original vocal version, along with the original panorama rendition of the song, which varied from Guinness Cavaliers, NLCB Fonclaire and Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille.

Official recognition and heartfelt thanks were given to Mark and Pat Loquan for their insight and devotion to the Trust as they move to further shores.  The Board of Directors of the Music Literacy Trust expresses gratitude to them and wish them well in their future endeavors.  Mark is the Founding Director of the Trust and holds an honorary position on the board.
