Trouble in Grenada!  Steel Band Association Boycotts 2010 Steelband Panorama!

Grenada FlagGrenada - The Grenada Steel Band Association wishes to inform the general public that due to its ongoing impasse with the Grenada Carnival Committee (G.C.C.), a decision has been taken by its membership to abstain from participating in the 2010 National Panorama Championship.

This decision, though regrettable, has become necessary to demonstrate the Association’s displeasure with the handling of matters related to the Steel Band movement, and in particular Carnival 2009.

These include the outstanding payment of prize monies from both Junior and Senior Panorama 2009, monies owing to Steel bands from the staging of the Bomb Competition in 2009 and the participation of Steel bands on the streets on Carnival Monday and Tuesday - a sum totaling approximately one hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

The Grenada Steel Band Association would like to assure the general public that our decision is in no way meant to destabilize or create any negative impact on Carnival 2010, but rather to ensure that the Steel band movement receives the level of respectability that it rightfully deserves, and that future celebrations would be organized professionally as a business, which would renowned to the benefit of the G.C.C, the steel band Association and Grenada as a whole.

The Association remains ready and willing to participate in events other than Panorama, including the launch of Carnival 2010, the staging of the Bomb-Tune Competition and playing on the streets on Carnival Monday and Tuesday – once a written agreement can be signed with the G.C.C.

Given the reality that Panorama is only ten weeks away, and there is still outstanding business to be concluded from 2009 and negotiations for 2010 has not yet commenced, the Association is of the opinion that it would be best for all parties to shelve this event in 2010.

The Grenada Steel Band Association apologizes for any inconveniences that may be caused by our decision but seeks the co-operation and understanding of the general public.

We look forward to your unwavering support as we endeavour to develop the Steel band movement in Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique.
