International Steelpan Jazz Challenge Finals on Sunday

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Eight steelpan ensembles will be competing in Sunday’s (November 4) First Citizens (FCB) International Steelpan Jazz Challenge 2012 Finals at the Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah in Port of Spain, Trinidad.  Starting time is 5:00 p.m. 

The winning ensemble will receive TT $50,000, with the second to eighth placed bands each collecting TT $25,000.  At the end of the qualifying round, south-based Golden Hands Steel Orchestra amassed the highest points. They were followed by the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service Band, with Moyenne and Sound Specialists of Laventille tying for third spot.

Representatives of the bands drew for playing positions last Tuesday afternoon at The Normandie in St. Ann’s. During the first round, bands performed one song from the list of approved songs, whereas for the Finals, competitors must perform two selections.

Described as the most eclectic mix of steelpan ensembles in a single event, the FCB International Steelpan Jazz Challenge 2012 is produced by the Queen’s Royal College Foundation and focuses on the steelpan ensemble’s ability to take the chosen songs and perform them in a jazz idiom.

Advance tickets priced at TT$100.00 are on sale at Crosby’s, St. James, Cleve’s, Frederick Street, Port of Spain, and from participating bands.  Public is invited to walk with their coolers.
