Global - “And Great Showers of Tears Came Down,” a short film produced and directed by award-winning “MasMan” filmmaker Dalton Narine, was selected by Creative Arts Film Festival, an online platform that is currently showcasing films of merit throughout the month of December.
Available without password on the Internet, the film may pique WST (When Steel Talks) readers’ interest for its creative soundtrack - marrying a steel pan score with the story of a black Marine who went to war a hawk and returned as a dove carrying an olive branch.
The pan is played by composer roycrosse, who also supplied art works and installation, and the photography includes combat and rural scenes shot in Vietnam during Narine’s tour of duty.
Narine recalls a heartbreaking moment as he and the editor raced against time nearing the end of the first draft.
The inimitable roycrosse had succumbed to cancer three days before it was completed. The film, of course, is dedicated to roycrosse (Please see the WST story about Narine’s take on the artist’s gung-ho spirit as he spun out six suites for the soundtrack despite doctors’ warnings to “cancel all plans”).
The death of roycrosse definitely shortened the life of the the film. (By contrast, “MasMan” took more than 25 cuts to be festival-ready.) Still, to date, “Showers” has been accepted by six festivals, including the recently concluded Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival; and the upcoming 1st Annual Short Film Festival, which will host its Awards ceremony December 13 in New York City. Narine’s film has been nominated for Best Documentary and Best Editor.
Here is the producer/director himself being interviewed about the film and his work just before the screening in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
