Brooklyn, New York, USA - “Extra, Extra, read all about it - the CASYM Steel Orchestra organization has executed another successful event.” You have heard the narrative, seen the headline and lived the experience before, but it never gets old. In fact CASYM continues to find new ways to out-do previous expectations of them, accomplishments and here-and-now activities. All this is commensurate with the fact that CASYM has one of the best steelpan music education and performance programs in North America.
This past weekend, CASYM held its annual Spring Concert which is designed to showcase the multiple talents of the CASYM performing arts and music education programs that serve the Brooklyn, New York communities. Like any other undertaking of this nature the proof of success is in the quality of the performances, graduates and participants. And in this regard CASYM left no doubt that their program ranks supreme.
2014 CASYM Adult Class
This was not the veteran CASYM stage-side or the CASYM world-class panorama champions steel orchestra performing on this day - and yet they were not missed. The near-capacity audience was treated to the complete complement of CASYM works which included the Adult Pan Class, P.S. 161, Class I, Class II, the I.C.I.D.C. dancers 1,2,3 and 4, the SWAT Steppers and other CASYM talents.
CASYM - 2014 Class 1 Steel Orchestra
Each group performed admirably. P.S. 161 set the initial bar pretty high with their performance. The pint-sized musicians simply delivered a performance that had the audience screaming for more. They were followed by Class 1 - who refused to be out done by their younger counterpart. Their presentation was fantastic. Their string of current and past favorite hits had the audience rocking. There wasn’t a cell phone that was not trained on the stage. Truthfully, most of the audience watched the show through their cell phones or iPads in video mode, as they gleefully captured the event. Closing the show was Class 2, with a varied repertoire which showcased their musicianship, showmanship and professionalism. Their instructors are Rico Hunte, Travis Roberts, Elroy Primus and Lakeisha Danglade.
P.S. 161 Steel Orchestra
Not to be left out were the performances by the I.C.I.D.C. dancers whose performances were weaved in between the steelpan music performances. They too were very well received. The dance instructors are Amanda Maximum, Brittany Horsford and Ingrid McKenzie.
By the overwhelming response of the audience to the invitation extended to join future CASYM educational and instructional classes, the CASYM legacy is well in hand. Moreover the next generation of highly intelligent, skilled and talented CASYM members is ‘now.’
CASYM Class 2 - 2014
