Pan Trinbago Says It Is Not Irrelevant

by Michael L. Joseph - Pan Trinbago

Michael Joseph - PRO of Pan Trinbago

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Listening to comments being made by some of the detractors of the Steelpan fraternity following the success of the show staged by five of the leading large Steelbands in Trinidad, one would believe that there is some new development in the Steelpan world that now makes Pan Trinbago Inc. T.C irrelevant.

Most of these neophytes, who have gained some verbal strength by suckling on the breast of Pan Trinbago, would not recall that over the years, Pan Trinbago has been advocating that the Steelbands, individually and or collectively, wean themselves by promoting shows and organizing programs to enhance their image, especially events that would sustain them financially, outside of the Carnival season.

We are always delighted, and supportive of this kind of initiative, especially when taken by members of our fraternity, and would like to congratulate the organizers of the Big 5 committee, while looking forward for more Steelband leaders coming together for similar events.

Pan Trinbago Inc T.C, could never be affronted by these kind of initiatives, for, over the years, the executive has introduced countless events of a similar nature outside of Panorama and the National Steelband music festivals to 1973, which after a seven year pause, was revived in 1980.

In December of 1981, Pan Trinbago held the first School Steelband Music Festival, without assistance from any of the relevant ministries. In 1998, Pan Trinbago introduced Pan in The 21st Century and Pan Down Memory Lane. In 2000, Pan Trinbago held the mass Choirs and Steel bands concert at the Jean Pierre Complex, where all Steelbands accompanied the Choirs simultaneously playing the Hallelujah Chorus. Panyard Sensation was also sensational in 2000.

A World Steel band Music festival was held in Madison Square Garden in Manhattan New York, on Sunday 19th June 2005, and that was spectacular to say the least. On Friday November 10th, 2006, Pan Trinbago held a most splendiferous program called HONOURING the PAN GUARDS, where most of our living legends of yesteryear, at home and abroad, were brought together for this grand occasion. In 2008, a new version of Champs In Concert – “CRÈME De La CRÈME was held, with Steelbands accompanying a number of prominent artistes. PANAZZ- the PAN JAZZ Experience was another Pan Trinbago production. STEEL FEST was another memorable experience with a number of bands from the four regions coming together on the streets of the Capital and ending in the Savannah to play our national anthem in unison on Sunday Sept, 29th 2013.

The National Youth Steel Orchestra with twenty five youths from the four regions, hosting a wonderful concert at Queens Hall, under the baton of Keron Valentine and Seion Gomez. Just to remind those who tend to forget, and those too young to remember that Pan Trinbago is the Vanguard of Steelband development.

If these events are now taken up by the Steel band leaders, we welcome them, as this would free up the executive of Pan Trinbago Inc T.C, to concentrate on better developing our Carnival product, our industrialization through the Steel drum factory, our international thrust amongst other developments that are in the pipeline, to the benefit of our Panist and our country.

We will continue to encourage and support our members to become self sufficient in whatever lawful form or fashion they may choose and urge our detractors to stop the shameful display of seeing ghosts and demons at every turn of events.

Your showing at the Emancipation Day Parade was in very poor taste, and disrespectful to say the least. Somehow, you all believe it was a J’Ouvert prance, so you came out playing CLOWNS, failing to understand the true meaning of EMANCIPATION. So sad!

Congratulations again to the organizers of the big 5 event, as we all continue working to take our indigenous art form to the next level.
