“The Bradley Years”

The Bradley Years represent the definitive collection of steelband music arrangements and performances for a large steel orchestra. This collection showcases seven classic arrangements from the master arranger Clive Bradley.  Bradley is considered to be the best steelband music arranger ever by many, including his peers.  In addition, the arrangements are performed by one of the finest steelbands in the world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley had a very special relationship with Pantonic.  This orchestra clinched the title of panorama champions five times in seven years - performing Bradley’s musical works.  The performances were captured by Basement Recordings days before, and in one instance, mere moments before they took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband music panorama competition.

The recordings capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband music recordings in its class.

This body of musical work is a sterling addition for all fans, educators, players, historians and fine music collectors.

Pictured here is the Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra. They’ll be at the Humboldt Botanical Garden’s “Music in the Garden’ series on Sunday.

California, USA - The Humboldt Botanical Garden Summer Music Series begins Sunday with a performance by the Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra.

This 16-piece band has been playing for local audiences for 20 years with traditional Calypso/Soca infused with jazz and World Beat styles.

Directors Kate and John Salazar started the band in 1999, inspired by their own experiences playing with 120-piece bands in Trinidad and Tobago. It was their dream to recreate the spirit of the panyard on the North Coast, teaching students in the traditional rote style of the Caribbean.

The garden opens at 10 a.m., and the music begins at 1 p.m.

Interim committee comprises 7 members including 2 current principals
Interim committee officially presented to the public on Tuesday, 28 May

Interim Committee of the Grenada Steel Band Association (GSA)

Grenada, W.I. - An interim committee for the Grenada Steel Band Association led by its Chairman Victor Ashby, former principal of the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS), was officially presented to the public on Tuesday, 28 May after an embroilment which ensued within the organisation led to the resignation of Jason Skeete as its president in April 2019.

As a result, meetings were held with Minister for Culture Norland Cox together with managers and arrangers of the various steelbands to discuss the fate of the organisation going forward which remained without an active executive for a short period.

A decision was taken to appoint an interim committee that will steer the ship until elections are called in September 2019.

....Presenting something old, something modern, something new, something futuristic or even galactic (Mars, the Bringer of War), as we would soon learn from this year’s show - is the norm.

Blind panist, ex-national footballer among Point honourees

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - While Point Fortin may be the smallest Borough in Trinidad, hometown heroes like visually impaired panist Michael Toussaint and former national footballer Reynold Carrington have the world taking notes.

The two men stood tall among 14 awardees at Tuesday night’s Civic Reception and Awards Ceremony hosted by the Point Fortin Borough Corporation in commemoration of the 39th anniversary of becoming a borough.

At age 64 and with no vision, Toussaint, who was born in Fanny Village, now plays and manages the world’s only steel band for the blind and partially sighted.

The Urban Fox Orchestra ((UFO) Pilots in London, England plays professionally and is a hit in the annual Nottinghill Carnival. And while he has the fame overseas, he said nothing was more humbling than to be honoured by his hometown.

....The panist began his career at Starland Steel Orchestra is Techier Village at age five and moved on to the bigger Dunlop Tornadoes. After moving to London in his adult years and taking pan to the English, a medical error left him totally blind.
