Switzerland-
The 8th Annual WALLBERG
Steelband Meeting held in Volketswil-Switzerland was again a night with good
steelpan performances. Organizer Peo Oertli-Kassim, invited four bands.
Shortly before this event he "discovered" STERLING'S
ANGELS, an all band. The pannists all siblings coming from two
different families. Young ladies are between the ages of 10 and 22, The band
played Sterling Betancourt's original and old time music.
The first band on the schedule was Move On. They have worked with arrangers
such as Junior Gill, Martin Grah, Brigitte Fischer and Andy Narell. Their
varied music includes, Calypso, Latin, Rock and well known Pop songs.
Pat Bernhard, a professional music teacher made his first encounter with Pan
when he arranged for a 50 piece Band. He was one of the arrangers
(co-operation with Tamla Batra) for "Peasant and Poet", played by PANCH at
the 2000 World Steelband Festival. At Wallberg he came together with Tamla
Batra (E-Bass), Max Felber (Drums) and Claudio Pini. Claudio Pini is the
arranger and composer for Ferrum Helveticum, who are probably the best
steelband at this time in all Switzerland. Pat and Pini, both play
the Double-Seconds. Traditional known as Jazz musicians, they entertained
the audience with nice standards and heavenly solos.
The organizer Peo Oertli-Kassim himself is a professional percussion
teacher. Some time ago he also started to play pan and formed the band
Rhytmics Selection. He has been experimenting with his 4 piece band on his
own composition which he calls steel percussion. On this night they would be
accompanied by Esa Tervala on the double guitar who plays with using
4-sticks-technics. In addition, Esa Tervala is also known as a pan tuner.
Between the breaks Ferrum Helveticum's brand new DVD ATLANTIC OSCILLATION
was shown on a big screen.
It was late and after midnight yet the crowd still not tired, Orq. Caché had
them all riding the Calypso and Latin beats. It will be hard for Peo to top
2004. With little money and no financial support he Peo depends on the
groups willingness to perform for a smaller wage as well. He also want to
offer good quality steelpan music. He we will see us in 2005 again. Walberg
has tradition, and yes I'd say for all Swiss pannist it's kind of a pan
Mekka, you simply should have been there.
