Michael Marcano
and Renegades
Steel Orchestra - Eyeing the 2006 Panorama Championship
2006 T&T Steelband Panorama Season

Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago - Just before the hectic final week of preparation and practice for the finals of the panorama competition, When Steel Talks sat down with Michael Marcano, manager of Renegades Steel Orchestra for a brief interview to get a sense of where the band is at for the season.  Marcano had just emerged from a meeting with section leaders of the band as they planned and strategized what they would need to take them to winner's row on Saturday night.  The last time these past panorama winners have taken the Panorama title was in 1997 with their master arranger Jit Samaroo's interpretation of Kitchener's Guitar Pan, and have been consistent finalists in the years since.

This year the band's tune of choice is De Fosto's Judgment Day, making this two years running that the band has played the popular calypso bard's music.  But musical collaborations between Renegades arranger Dr. Jit Samaroo and Michael Marcano have also punctuated the panorama scene in recent years.  In 2003 and 2004 the band went to panorama with compositions from the twosome, the selections being Iron  Band and Pan On De Road, respectively.

The music relationship between Marcano and Samaroo goes as far back as 1986, two years after the former became a member of Renegades.  Marcano has played pan under Samaroo, and approached the legendary arranger for assistance with one of his compositions, For The Love Of Pan.  According to Marcano, Samaroo 're-shaped' it and Renegades went on to make it the band's calypso of choice in the 1986 steelband music festival.  The two have worked together many times since then.  The Renegades manager has composed music for Samaroo's daughter for her school calypso competitions which she has been extremely successful with, winning on three or  four occasions.  He continues to compose for junior and professional calypsonians and last but not least, Marcano himself has performed his own calypso compositions.

Whether it is a musical collaboration, or combined efforts of managing the musical direction of the band, Dr. Jit Samaroo and Michael Renegades are a solid base for this powerhouse steel orchestra. With practice and determination as watchwords, and avid supporters in the panyard each night while they drill relentlessly, nine-time panorama champions Renegades are once more a force to be reckoned with on finals night in the race for Pan glory.  And When Steel Talks will be there at the finish line.
