Earl Brooks Sr.
Takes Over The Reigns of Hatters Steel Orchestra Trinidad - This time around When Steel Talks pre-panorama roundup caught up with noted steelband music arranger Earl Brooks, Sr. for an exclusive interview. Brooks, Sr. is currently the 2006 arranger for Hatters Steel Orchestra located in Southern Trinidad. Mr. Brooks was also recovering from injuries received in a slight road accident this past Thursday.
Earl Brooks is returning to Hatters after a two-year absence. He views his return as a home-coming, and Hatters is a band that he feels very comfortable around. Their tune of choice is De Fosto's "Tribute To Bradley." This year's selection is particularly special to this arranger as he considers the late great Clive Bradley his mentor. He is approaching this arrangement with the "sprit of Bradley." This approach has impacted on his style, and in this year's arrangement, Brooks has put in a "little taste of Bradley." At the time of the interview - a little over a week before the 2006 panorama preliminaries, Brooks is already close to the end of the tune. The arranger says the response from the band has been quite positive. Practice runs nightly until 10:00 PM. Hatters is entering the large-band category in this year's panorama, and currently the band has ninety-five players as it competes in the preliminaries stage of the judging. However Brooks expects the full compliment of one hundred and twenty players that he is accustomed to as they proceed to the finals - he optimistically predicts. He believes that the remaining Hatters pan players will be back because they will miss their band. A veteran panorama arranger, Brooks underscored that he understood real panorama-type arrangements. Noting that Panorama music is a 'special kind of music' that has to be brought across in a special way to the people and judges, he said it has to have 'belly' and that it "comes from the heart."
