Ray
Holman is an
internationally
renowned educator,
musician, arranger
and composer who has
received wide
acclaim for his work
in the field of
music and in
particular with the
Steel Pan, the
National Instrument
of Trinidad and
Tobago. Early in his
career, his
outstanding talent
was recognized and
at a young age, he
started arranging
and composing music
for some of the
country’s best known
steel bands. Ray was
the winner of two
Panorama
Championships in
1969 & 1970.
Ray
graduated with a
Bachelor of Arts
Honours Degree from
the University of
the West Indies, St.
Augustine in
Trinidad. He
composed some 200
musical pieces and
produced 4 LPs and 3
Compact Discs. In
1989, his
achievements were
recognized by the
Government of
Trinidad and Tobago
when the Humming
Bird Medal Silver
was awarded to him
for his work in
Culture/Music.
In
the United States,
Ray has delivered
key performances,
including at the
Madison Square
Garden and the
Lincoln Centre in
Manhattan; he was a
Visiting Artist in
Seattle at the
University of
Washington. In
Canada, he started
the first Steel Pan
Programme at the
University of
Manitoba. Ray Holman
continues to travel
and teach
internationally, and
is scheduled to
perform in Brisbane,
Australia in April
2013.
In
Trinidad and Tobago,
he founded the Ray
Holman Band, a small
group of talented
musicians whose
repertoire is varied
with a touch of
Jazz. He continues
to arrange for steel
bands locally,
regionally and
internationally. He
was recently
recognized as one of
the 50 Music Icons
of Trinidad & Tobago
as the country
marked its 50th
Anniversary of
Independence. |
