Any
connoisseur of pan will tell you that no
serious conversation about great steelband music and
its history can take place without the name
Antigua being front and center in the mix. Indeed
Antigua is the land of many firsts as it relates
to the Steelpan Instrument - the first
Steelband Association and the first steelband
recordings, among others.
This year
Antigua marks fifty years
of carnival of
the bands (1957 - 2007). As part of this
celebration the steelbands
have been given
the option of playing any Antiguan Calypso or
Soca song produced within the last 50 years.
Naturally the likes of Short Shirt, Swallow and
Burning Flames who have ruled the roost many
times with their superior ditties - are the
preferred choices of the orchestras when given
this type of latitude.
Antigua's
National Panorama will be held Thursday, August 2nd,
2007 at Antigua's Recreation Grounds (Carnival City).
The following is a listing of what the steel
orchestras are playing for this year's
competition, which features veteran arrangers in
the ring with bands whose solid bases as
phenomenal music entities, will once again be in
competition mode.
