Pan Kultur’s Pan Weekend in Dortmund, Germany
Germany - Pan Kultur , Dortmund’s top steelband hosted their annual Pan Weekend on the 24-25 March 2006. It was a hectic weekend filled with the sweet sounds of steelpan music played by the very young to the well-established pannists in a variety of genres entertaining their audiences in the City of Dortmund and the Solendo – your beach at the port where you will enjoy unforgettable moments.
The Pankids of Dortmund, formed by children from 8 schools, the Pan Gang, Pan Family Project and ECS Steel drum bau performed at the Solendo between 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on the afternoon of the 24th March. Present was Eckhard Schultz of ECS, established steelpan manufacturer in Dortmund, who was available to give more detailed information about the pan instruments.
The Pan Weekend schedule
continued with performances in the evening by the BIMA Quintet from
Dortmund with BIMA showing his love for the music through his passionate
playing of their jazz and Latin renditions. They were followed by a
special performance from the dynamic duo of Eamon Thorpe and Pedro
Burgess supported by Rudy Ramcharan on percussion, what a treat that was
for the audience from the elders of the steelpan artform in Europe.
They certainly set the platform for a outstanding performance by the
young and skilful pan aficionado Samuel Dubois and Friends. The
evening’s entertainment concluded with music supplied by DJ Jorge –
Playa Latino Disco.
Saturday the 24th March saw the UK’s traditional steel band, Nostalgia, and members of Pan Kultur’s Marching band perform in the Dortmund City Centre. Their captivating music entertained the throngs of shoppers/tourists and even the rain only manage to delay them for a short time before their final performance in the City Square when they celebrated Martin Buschman’s birthday with their rendition of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Happy Birthday’. The evening programme continued at the Solendo with the Bang Bang Steel Orchestra opening the evening. A well disciplined steelband, featuring players from as young as 12 with a great sound delivering a wide repertoire who were accompanied by master musician, Martin Buschman on saxophone. Nostalgia followed, snaking their way through the packed Solendo’s audience entertaining them with their catchy renditions during the breaks. The night however was dominated by Europe’s finest, Ebony Steel Band, whose first session was well received leaving the patrons eager to hear what was next. After a final vibrant jam session by Nostalgia that finished outside the venue, Ebony played as the final live act of the evening with their endless repertoire that seem to go on and on with the audience demanding more after every tune and Ebony delivering without fail. No tune was replayed. Tired players driven by their musicality and the audience’s encouragement eventually gave way to DJ Jorge who ensured the party lasted into the wee hours of the morning.
Pan Kultur now looks forward to the Trinidad and Tobago World Cup fixture in Dortmund against Sweden on the 10th June 2006 when they hope to host a Marching Steel Band outside the Stadium and Dortmund’s largest Soca Fetes before and after the fixture in the Solendo. World Cup 2006. Go T&T Go! ©
