New York - On
Wednesday March 22, 2006
When Steel Talks caught up with
Sesame Flyers International as it presented its annual Black History
Month celebration program at the majestic Brooklyn Borough Hall
Rotunda. The marble-based Victorian structured opened in
1848 as Brooklyn's City Hall and on this night served as a beautiful venue
for the evening's showcase of talent, art and culture through
the performing arts and the spoken word. The event was held
under the patronage of the Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz.
Mrs. Janet Cummings, the Sesame Flyers Program
Director opened the proceedings and spoke of the success of the program in
meeting and providing a challenging environment for the personal
development of the young people.
The night belonged to the youth performers, their
proud instructors, parents and the Sesame Flyers International
Organization who have skillfully engineered and managed a series of
very successful educational and cultural programs throughout Brooklyn, New York that have become integral parts of the fabric
of the
community they serve. The Beacon Programs, as they are
known, are the talk of the town. Young people from all over the
community participate in these Beacon initiatives to develop their
talents and acquire new skills that will assist them in
the future.
The night's performances included musical
selections from Sesame Flyers Steel Orchestra with additional
showcases of talent that included poetry, rap, stepping, Caribbean
and African Dance. Present were Raymond Luke and Curtis Nelson
chairman and executive director of Sesame Flyers International
respectively.
Sesame Flyers Steel Orchestra, led by musical
director Freddy Harris, III captured the attention of the attendees,
particularly the young people, with its rendition of Ne-Yo's
current R&B smash So Sick. Keith Marcelle, the manager of the steel orchestra has high
expectations for the steelband this year.
