Laventille Steelband Festival 2006

GLOSS honor for Bradley, Warriors

THE LATE CLIVE Bradley is to be honored at this year’s 7th Annual Laventille Steelband Festival (LSF) at a special ceremony called GLOSS (Glamour, Lights, Organization, Spirit and Soul).  Staged by the Laventille Steelband Festival Committee, GLOSS is scheduled to take place on July 12, at the House of Angostura, Eastern Main Road, Laventille, from 7.30pm.

Clive Bradley

Bradley who was best known for his winning steelband works with the legendary WITCO Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, will be awarded posthumously.  The awards event, designed to toast the “heroes” of Laventille, will commence the programme of activities for the 2006 edition of the Festival with the theme “Proud To Be Laventille...III.”

The GLOSS honour roll also includes former Calypso Monarchs The Mighty Terror (Fitzgerald Henry) and The Mighty Bomber (Clifton Ryan); pan tuner Lincoln Noel; musician Fitzroy Coleman; and six members of the T&T Soca Warriors who originally came from the Laventille catchment area.  They are: Dennis Lawrence, Aurtis Whitley, Brent Sancho, Jason Scotland, Densil Theobald and Russell Latapy.

A corporate award will be presented to Angostura for its unswerving commitment to the Festival from its inception. According to committee vice-chairman Julien Cudjoe, “too often we seem to be late in paying tribute to our outstanding sons and daughters, particularly in the field of culture and it is essentially because of this, the Laventille Steelband Festival is taking this corrective step with its inaugural special awards ceremony called GLOSS.”

He is of the view that “award” without “reward” for “our icons” would not be going all the way with those who have served “us” so well.  “Now that they are in the twilight of their years, we think it opportune to celebrate their efforts with this formal awards ceremony,” Cudjoe declared.  Since the inception of the LSF seven years ago - which is the community’s contribution to the observance of Emancipation - the organizing committee has bestowed accolades unto adults Laventille  residents for their contributions to the development of the steelpan and community service, as well as youth awards for sports, culture, education and community service.  Usually held on the day of the steelband street parade, which culminates the cultural showcase, the stage for that ceremony was the compound of pan manufacturing company TTIL.

Effective this year, however, the latter service moves up a notch and will form part of the GLOSS awards too. The steelband street parade takes place on Sunday, August 6, from 4pm to midnight along the Eastern Main Road, (dubbed the Eastern Parkway) Laventille, between Mc Allister and Leon Streets.  On Republic Day (Sept 24) a steelband concert titled “The Eight of Hearts,” will be staged at the Angostura Sports Grounds, Trinity Avenue, Laventille.  The featured orchestras are Phase II Pan Groove, Neal and Massy Trinidad All Stars, WITCO Desperadoes, bp Renegades, Sagicor Exodus, PCS Nitrogen Starlift, TCL Group Skiffle Bunch and RBTT Redemption Sound Setters on the musical showcase intended to complement the CARIFESTA 1X programme of events.
