Staged by the Laventille Steelband
Festival Foundation
| Clive Bradley |
Trinidad - PRESIDENT GEORGE Maxwell Richards has agreed to serve as patron of this year’s
inaugural awards ceremony called GLOSS (Gems, Laventille, Outstanding, Spirit
and Soul).
GLOSS is a presentation of the community-based outfit called the Laventille
Steelband Festival Foundation and is the first in a three part series of events
to mark the 7th Annual Laventille Steelband Festival.
The Laventille Steelband Street Parade to be held on August 6, and a steelband
concert featuring eight of the nation’s top orchestras, simply titled the “8 of
Hearts,” are the other events. The latter takes place on September 24, at the
Angostura Grounds, Laventille.
GLOSS, which takes place on Wednesday night (July 12) at the House of Angostura,
Eastern Main Road, Laventille, from 7.30 pm, is designed to toast the “heroes”
of the community, and commences activities for the 2006 edition of the Festival,
with the theme “Proud To Be Laventille III.”
A previous awards ceremony which took place on the day of the street parade,
saluting residents for community service, contribution to the development of the
steelband, as well as youths awards, will now be merged with GLOSS. According to
committee chairman Michael Cooper: “It’s unfair that a few bad apples in the
Laventille community should grab the headlines and the attention. This community
of Laventille have treasures all its own and we want to present them to the
national community and by extension the world.”
THE late Clive Bradley is among the list of honourees. Bradley, who was best
known for his winning steelband works with the legendary Witco Desperadoes Steel
Orchestra, will be awarded posthumously. The GLOSS honour roll includes six
members of the T&T Soca Warriors who originally came from the Laventille
catchment area.
They are: Dennis Lawrence, Aurtis Whitley, Brent Sancho, Jason Scotland, Densil
Theobald and Russell Latapy.
A corporate award will be presented to Angostura Limited for its unswerving
commitment to the Festival from its inception.
