Washington, D.C. USA - It was indeed a memorable occasion on Sunday October 1, 2023 for all participants in the Caribbean Cultural Showcase, including the Pan Masters Steel Orchestra of Washington, DC - which in May 2023 celebrated 38 years of embracing and showcasing “PAN”, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago.
With support of the Mayor’s Office on Caribbean Community Affairs, the creative direction of the Organizers of DC Caribbean Carnival, Inc., and a collaborative engagement by cultural enthusiasts in the DMV, Pan Masters successfully delivered a five-minute showcase of “Caribbean Dance” at the showcase as its contribution to the 4th World Cultural Festival held on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
In addition to individual participants and Flag Bearers, notable contributors included Luis and Monique of Caribeat; Adrianna - East Indian Dancer; Wayne and Eastcoast Limers; Richards Carnival; Diane Marshall and the Bele’ Dancers; Okeemah and the Karnival Bounce Crew; Shacomba Stilt Dancers; Candace Thomas and the Pan Masters Steel Orchestra; and Sarge and Angie of the DC Caribbean Carnival Organization.
The presentation included Folk Dancers; Carnival Masqueraders; East Indian Dancer/Tassa Drummers; Caribbean Flag Wavers; Moko Jumbies, and - a live steelband featuring an abbreviated version of the popular 2019 “Savannah Grass” Soca composition by Kes the Band. As the production started, the energy level immediately kicked into high gear, and was fully sustained by all participants. The long awaited showcase had finally blossomed!
What a befitting manner to proudly embrace the potpourri of Caribbean cultures on display in the District of Columbia!
