Global - With profound regrets When Steel Talks is sad to share news of the passing of the honorable, great and legendary panist Robert Greenidge on June 8, 2026. He was one of our organization’s biggest supporters from the very start.

Robert is simply one of the greatest musicians to have ever touched the steelpan instrument. There is no other like the man with ‘the velvet touch’ - champion Panorama arranger, recording and performing artist, panist extraordinaire - Robert Greenidge. Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and New York’s Moods Pan Groove and D’Radoes Steel Orchestra are just three of the major steel orchestras he worked with over the years.

He has rubbed shoulders with many of the greatest musicians of all time - Earth, Wind and Fire, Ralph MacDonald, John Lennon and Grover Washington Jr. to name just a few, as toured for decades with Jimmy Buffet. Simply a music statesman, Robert Greenidge has left an indelible impression of his own personal uncommon greatness, and all that of the steelpan instrument, on the musical psyche of all who encountered him.

Steelband arranger Roger Greenidge, himself a respected musician in the steelpan music art form, is the brother of Robert. Their sister, Annette Greenidge Russell, also shares in the loss of Robert.
