Ray Holman
Starlift Steel Orchestra

2006 T&T Steelband Panorama Season

Trinidad - Starlift has been going through some lean times and "Starlift was my band at one time" says noted arranger Ray Holman on his return to the legendary Starlift.  He was asked to help turn around the fortunes of the one-time powerhouse steel orchestra.

Mr. Holman cancelled a previously scheduled engagement in Australia to avail himself to Starlift.  As part of his plan to resurrect the orchestra, Mr. Holman has moved towards changing the sound of the orchestra by getting different tuners and additional skilled players.  Mr. Holman readily admits that this is not an easy job.

Starlift's musical selection for this year's panorama is If We Really Want, one of his own compositions vocalized by Derrick Seales.  The band will again compete in the large category.  Holman also said that he has completed about a third of the arrangement at this point.

The band's new panyard is located just off Mucurapo Road on the suburbs of Port-of-Spain, and practice begins at 7:30 PM nightly.  Because of his commitment to Starlift Steel Orchestra, Mr. Holman also does not presently see himself in the role he played last year with 2005's panorama champions - Phase II Pan Groove - because of time constraints.  The task at Starlift is a "far more difficult one" says Holman.  More than just a change in musical direction for Starlift, his alma mater, Mr. Holman is also pressing for a change in the mindset of the players themselves.
