Akeem Larrier is an aspiring musician who has a deep love for the steel pan. From a tender age Akeem began to learn the steel pan at St. Margaret’s Boys’ AC School. When he turned ten, he performed with the school band and won his first Junior Panorama. At the Junior Panorama level, Akeem has won two Panoramas performing with St. Margaret’s Boys’ AC School and won one as the arranger alongside Carel Taylor. Akeem has also won a few conventional Panorama competitions; one Single Pan performing with Newtown Playboyz, and four with Trinidad All Stars Steel Orchestra, including the International Panorama held in 2015.
He attended Trinity College for seven years where he has developed his musical gifts even more. His time at Trinity also allowed Akeem to perform in concerts, shows, Sanfest SteelPan Ensemble and even winning in the Drumology section of the Sanfest. He obtained four A’ Levels and seven O’Levels during his attendance. Trinity College introduced him to Jazz and improvisation due to the Jazz workshops held once a year for secondary school students, where he was able to meet with other musicians and extend his network. He has also gotten the chance to arrange for the first time for Sanfest alongside his colleagues, and they placed second in the SteelPan category.
Larrier’s love of music goes back to his deceased mother, accompanist at the All Saints Anglican Chapel of Ease, Maraval, who passed away nine years ago. He and his sister have since been in the care of their aunt.
Due to the presence of his aunt, he was able to finish secondary school and his Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts Music. Additionally, under her guidance, he has learnt to balance academia, Pan and his spiritual life. As he attained his degree, Larrier is certain about his love of music but not yet sure where it will take him. With that being said his overriding wish is to be the next arranger for Trinidad All Stars.
