George Rampersad
George Rampersad was born in Tunapuna, Trinidad. He attended Tunapuna Presbyterian School and St. Mary’s College and worked at BWIA, Trinidad as an aircraft mechanic from 1976 to 1984.
He played pan with Starland Steel Orchestra, Tunapuna – 1975 to 1978. A founding member of Tunapuna all Stars Steel Orchestra in 1978, he also played with and arranged music for Tunapuna All Stars from 1978 to 1984. He also played with Hummingbirds Pan Groove, St. James at Panorama 1980 to 1983.
He migrated to Denmark in 1984 and taught pan in music schools, youth clubs and adult evening classes in the cities of Odense and Aarhus, Denmark. Rampersad founded Denmark All Stars in the city of Aarhus and arranged the music for the 1st European Steelpan Festival in Paris, France, in 2000.
As player/arranger
with Sweet Pans,
he’s toured
Manchester, England.
He co-arranged with
composer Jens
Winther (Denmark) in
a joint performance
with Sweet Pans and
Aalborg Symphony
Orchestra in the
1200th
anniversary
celebrations of the
city of Aalborg.
Rampersad has had
performances with
singer/composer Roy
Pascal (Trinidad)
and the On Purpose
(Soca) at the
Festival
d’Africussion
(Berlin, Germany),
Roskilde Festival,
Copenhagen Karneval,
(Denmark) and
Falkenberg (Sweden).
Other performances
have been with:
guitarist Rikki
Illilonga (Zambia),
the band Ridim Roots
(Afrobeat), singer
Marvin Bankston
(USA) and the band
Third World
Connection (Funk &
Soul).
