The Roadblock Steel Orchestra
Roadblock Steel Orchestra, a new and upcoming steelband, is based in the community of Trou Macaque, Laventille, Trinidad. Roadblock is a small conventional steelband which decided to enter the Panorama competition for the very first time in 2016.
The manager, Martin Cain, is an expert musician who has served many years in the Desperadoes Steel Orchestra and the National Steel Symphony of Trinidad and Tobago. Martin Cain has had the vision of leading his own band for quite some time and mobilized to make this vision a reality in late 2012.
There are a number of entities under Roadblock’s umbrella, one of which is what we call the ‘Mother’, where it all began, the band Roadblock with Martin Cain. A five (5) piece band consisting of a panist, vocalist, drummer, guitarist and bass guitarist. Roadblock has performed at numerous events across Trinidad and is always a delight amongst the young and the young at heart.
The band decided to broaden their talent to include the teaching of some of the instruments to interested young persons in the area; hence, Roadblock School for the Arts was formed in 2008, as a way of giving back to the Community of Laventille. The concept was created based on the struggle of the founding member, as a youth growing up in the area, having been exposed to positive influences in Desperadoes Steel Orchestra.
Forming the School for the Arts provides a structured and positive way for the young, impressionable minds in the area to be exposed to varying forms of the musical arts. The school offers training in Music (Practical & Theory), in Steel Pan, Key Board, Guitar, Folk and Modern Dance, as well as Vocal Training for students aged 4 to 19.
