Steelpan Tuner
Great Lincoln Noel Remembered
Desperadoes' Anthony McQuilkin
shares
his Memories of Late Pan Tuner Lincoln Noel
Port-of-Spain, Trinidad
-
On the eve of the celebration of, and farewell
tribute to - the life of
pan tuner great Lincoln Noel, one of the men who knew him for many years
spoke with
When Steel Talks
(WST)
about Noel - the man who was great in deeds, but as a rule shunned the
limelight. It was an apt epitaph - and explains why it seems
difficult, to near impossible, to source a photograph of Noel.
Assistant manager for Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, Anthony McQuilkin
shared his remembrances, and described Noel as "a man who you could
find in a corner, shunning the spotlight, just taking care of things, because he believed
there was always a lot of work to be done." And it is this
aspect - taking care of things - that immediately came to the
forefront as McQuilkin began chronicling the character and deeds of one of
Desperadoes' greatest, and world-renowned, pan tuners.

Baltimore, MD -- Baltimore Education and Cultural

sponsor of the Harbor Knights Youth Steel Orchestra,
recently accepted an invitation for the children's orchestra to perform
in Washington, DC. The invitation was to play at a party, but not just
anyone would be in attendance, because the party was at the UK Embassy.
The Caribbean Night Party was a gathering of approximately 100
representatives from the following countries: Antigua & Barbuda,
Armenia, Australia, Austria, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Finland,
Gabon, Germany, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malta, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland,
United Kingdom and the United States. The party was a great success
with great food, beverages and the lively entertainment provided
exclusively by the Harbor Knights Youth Steel Orchestra resulted in lots
of dancing to the melodic tunes emerging from their steel pan drums.

CARIFESTA team ready for
Trinidad & Tobago
Antigua -
Meantime, one of the arrangers for the National Youth Steel Orchestra,
Patrick “Stone” Johnson, said the group is ready and up to good
standard.
“The group is up to a good standard and we will continue to sharpen our
skills up until the very end.”
The National Youth Steel Orchestra and “Just Six” (a mini group within
the orchestra comprising the older players) have a repertoire of over 20
songs and is expected that the group will be encouraged and educated by
other pan enthusiasts in Trinidad.
The National Youth Orchestra recently won the OECS youth pan festival in
Dominica.
Minister with responsibility for Culture and Chair of the Carifesta
Committee, Eleston Adams, said thorough planning has gone into the
country’s involvement in this year’s Carifesta and this strongly
represents the government's seriousness of the development of the

"You can't have successive generations never be able to forge a link between
the music coming from a Beethoven string quartet and a passage in Clive

hard monuments without meanwhile creating other things that spring from
dreams and imagination." Bishop said.

Pan in Africa? Yes! Winter in Africa? What? Snow is, indeed a
reality if you are familiar with the atmospheric conditions in
Southern Africa.
In semi-arid Botswana where temperatures seldom go below zero
degrees, panists of Rainbow High School Steelpan Ensemble continue to
show their musical mettle – often with their mokojumbies in tandem.
The Winter School Term was as hectic as any other season for the
students who continue to show that books and pan can certainly dwell
in pantastic harmony.

The
Report Card
[An
Independent View and Response To The 2006 NY Steelband
Report]
Great concept -- the Report Card.
I
truly am proud of your website and at times wonder, are there others of
this nature existing -- in the Middle East, the African continent,
Yugoslavia, Turks and Caicos, on the moon? Where has pan reached? And why
are there still this abundance of problems attached in the 21st century,
even in "mecca" of pan -- T&T? As a human and social development
guidance counselor, motivational speaker and pan consultant, managing my
own improvement consultancy company -- The Platinum Mind --
for twenty-one months now, in Trinidad, I am very concerned and take
special interest in lifestyle and behaviour. A stickler for constant
and speedy improvement.

Ebony Captures Their
15th Panorama Title!
UK Panorama In
Pictures
United Kingdom
-
Notting
Hill Carnival’s theme for 2006 was ASPIRING AND ACHIEVING IN UNITY. A
quick look around the pan yards made you realised that the teamwork and
diligence displayed by pannists were the perfect examples to promote
this theme. Nine steel orchestras with over 600 pan musicians who
practiced for hundreds of hours played thousands of pan instruments on
the night
Ebony Steel Orchestra captured their
15th Panorama ‘Champions of Steel’ title when the UK Pan Community
celebrated the 28th anniversary of this renowned competition. The
evening was blessed with sporadic torrential showers before the start of
the competition but this did not deter anyone from attending this highly
fuelled national steelband musical battle. Eternity Brass, the champions
of the Battle of Drums competition at the 2006 Rotterdam Carnival opened
the show with some energetic drumming accompanied by choreographed
dances. Their appearance at this year’s Panorama competition was made
possible through an exchange program brokered by the British Association
of Steelbands and the organisers of Rotterdam Carnival, Ducos, in
Holland. In return, Ebony Steel Orchestra will appear as a guest band at
the 2007 Rotterdam Carnival.

New York Steelbands - 2006 Panorama and
Beyond
- Grades A-Z
An in depth analysis of one the
greatest annual performances of tuned percussionists in North
America
New York - New York is a very competitive town. It is not a place for the
weak of heart. Like the saying goes "if you can make it here you
can make it anywhere. The survival of a steel orchestra in New York
depends on its members possessing resiliency, stubbornness, being extremely
resourceful and having undying, illogical love for the artform. In
reality any orchestra that makes it out of the gates in New York is a
successes story. The Big Apple remains a hostile environment for
steelband. Weather, space, local government policies and conflicts of
culture and art continue to bedevil the movement. Yet, like Jazz,
America's only original music artform, it thrives, lives and inspires.
There are more young people playing the steelpan instrument than ever
before. Ironically in spite of its hardships, pan remains the urban instrument of choice.
New York
remains the Mecca for the steelpan instrument in North America. No
place outside of Trinidad can match the numbers of steelpan enthusiasts
and fans. There are over 8 million people in New York and we dare say
that the majority of them have or will at sometime in the near future,
come across the steelpan instrument, largely due to the efforts of the NY panman
and panwoman. However, a crack
in the egg is becoming visible as incompetent and selfish leadership is
beginning to take its toll on the efforts towards steelpan unity in the
community. The frustration index among veteran players has increased
and is higher than it has been in years.

CASYM RULES!
New York
-
As
it ended, the 2006 WIADCA (West Indian American Day Carnival

some, and sadness and tears for others. CASYM Steel orchestra who
played in position eleven out of the twelve competitors, emerged as
the 2006 panorama champions. The annual New York steelband competition
eventually took place almost twenty-four hours after its originally
scheduled time. Periods of heavy rains and winds from the tail end of
what had been Hurricane Ernesto kayoed the September 2, 7:00 PM
showtime, even as still-hopeful patrons stood in line at the ticket
booth outside the Brooklyn Museum grounds venue, being soaked to the
bone. Officials would eventually appear and inform them and others
awaiting word, that the show would be held at 4:00 PM the following
day, Sunday September 3, as part of the All Day Caribbean Festival.
