“The
Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Arranger Al “Allos” Foster leads D’Radoes’
‘Pan Army’ into the New York Panorama
Thunderdome
|
New
York, USA - This is indeed the year of
change. Moreover, it is a year when many of the
participating New York steel orchestras
introduced new arrangers to the steelband music
panorama landscape. In fact, there were five
‘arranger changes’ made this season. This year
D’Radoes Steel Orchestra has the talented Al
“Allos” Foster at the arranging helm. This is
Mr. Foster’s maiden voyage into the New York
panorama scene.

Basement Recordings’
2010 New York Pan Yard Recording Schedule
|
New
York, USA - For many years Basement
Recordings, Inc. - parent company of
PanOnTheNet and When Steel Talks - has
visited the pan yards of some of New York’s
finest steel orchestras, to capture the
phenomenal results of the work put in by the
bands as they prepare for New York’s annual
steelband panorama competition. It is critical
that bands have the foresight to be chronicled
and documented, especially after the euphoria of
panorama has come and gone.

The Pan View - from the
Pan Yard of Pantonic Steel Orchestra
Pantonic is a lean, mean fighting machine -
looking for Goliath
|
New
York, USA - Pantonic Steel Orchestra will
enter the “Battle Zone” known as Panorama as a
lean, mean, fighting machine. Their tune of
choice is “Battle Zone” sung by Anslem Douglas -
music by Edwin Pouchet; lyrics by Alvin Daniell.
‘Underdog’ is not a word that is commonly
associated with Pantonic Steel Orchestra. And
yet undeniably Pantonic finds itself in just
that inalienable position.
There is a saying that goes ‘you never know who
your real friends and supporters are’ until
you’re down, or, are in a real dog fight.
Pantonic has begun to find that out. Internal
strife has caused many to abandon ship.

The Pan View - from the
Pan Yard of CASYM Steel Orchestra
“Tell Dem” CASYM is coming for real!
|
New
York, USA - Little people, big people,
young people, mature people and lots of parents
dot CASYM’s pan yard on Church Avenue. Not even
the constant off and on drizzle of rain can zap
the energy and commitment of these young
CASYMites. It is now after 12:00 a.m.
Well past the normal bedtime of these young
people as the section leaders guide them through
another round of the newly added music.
On one night, some of the younger children
jumped rope, played tag, and in fact engaged in
any activity that took up their attention - it
was like a kiddie “night” care (instead of
kiddie daycare) in other parts of the large pan
yard, and it was taking place under the aegis of
the elders and in the safety of the pan
community.

The Pan View - from the
Pan Yard of Despers USA Steel Orchestra
Facing the challenge of Panorama,
gentrification & high expectations...
|
New
York, USA - From two blocks away we can
hear tenors whistling, double seconds singing,
guitar pans humming and basses grumbling. As we
move in closer to this sonic epicenter, that
unmistakable distinct sound of a great steel
orchestra overtakes you. The clarity of the
situation overwhelms your musical senses, as
your legs and other body parts - without
permission - systematically begin to fall into
perfect cadence with the music. The players
skillfully romance their instruments, producing
notes sounding like sweet chocolate raindrops
falling from the leaves of a tree. No doubt we
are in the domain of Despers USA Steel
Orchestra.

‘Champions of Steel’ 2010 returns to
Horniman’s Pleasance
|
London, UK
- 2010 marks the 32nd anniversary of the
esteemed competition, Champions of Steel.
Paddington Youth Steel Orchestra led by Zac
Herbert was victorious in the initial
competition held in 1978. Since that time
this prestigious event which acts as a precursor
to the main Notting Hill on-the-road
celebrations, has grown in distinction from the
wealth of steel band music and adept musicality
of the musicians on offer.
....This year sees seven of the UK’s top steel
bands in the finals to be held on Saturday 28th
August at Horniman’s Pleasance, Kensal Road,
London W10.

The Pan View - from the
Pan Yard of Sonatas Steel Orchestra
Champion Sonatas entering the “Battle Zone”
- no prisoners allowed...
|
New York, USA
- The crowd was there, the food was there and of
course the music was there. On this warm Summer
night the community of Crown Heights, Brooklyn
was rocking to sounds and music of a world-class
steel orchestra preparing for a major
competition with two weeks to go. Area residents
took full advantage of the front seats and view
that their perfectly positioned homes provided
them. In addition, many out-of-towners could be
seen throughout the yard ‘vibing’ and taking in
the scene. Yes indeed, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln
Center and Radio City caliber performances in
Brooklyn for free.

Pan Yards of Sesame Flyers and CrossFire
Steel Orchestras
|
New York, USA
- When Steel Talks (WST) took in the vibes at
the pan yard of Sesame Flyers last evening after
the early-morning vandalism that disrupted their
music flow. About two blocks away, WST could
hear the beautiful sounds of the orchestra as
they ran through their parts on steelpan
instruments built by Learie Harrigin, and now
tuned by Desmond “Mappo” Richardson. The group
is going with Len “Boogsie” Sharpe’s “Pan Army”
for the 2010 New York panorama.
In the yard, some lights were back up, a
testament to the work that must have been put in
by members of the music organization in their
determination not to be relegated to complete
darkness and probably a cancelled practice
session.

Orchestra Pan Yard Vandalized!

New York, USA -
The Brooklyn, New York Pan Yard of Sesame Flyers
Steel Orchestra was broken into during the very
early morning hours of Thursday August 19, 2010
and vandalized. The perpetrators left the yard
in disarray and completely destroyed the
electrical fittings and extensions put in place
to facilitate lighting for the band’s nightly
rehearsals.
Band leader Keith Marcelle (and also President
of USSA [United States Steelband Association])
told When Steel Talks (WST) that the acts bore
the markings of deeds done “with complete

Tay Lay Lay with Kitch
brings theatre camp to end
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - ....Queen’s Hall’s
Theatre Camp culminated on August 6 with Tay Lay
Lay with Kitch, a full-scale concert starring
the 80 children who participated in the annual
event’s 2010 edition.
....Having focused on the contributions of
assorted cultural icons—from Boogsie Sharpe to
Bob Marley—in years past, this time around the
camp honoured the life and work of Aldwyn
Roberts, The Lord Kitchener.
....The show kicked off with an extempo-styled
biography of the late calypsonian: “Lord
Kitchener’s statue is at Roxy/The man used to
dress real foxy,” the stage-full of children
sang. Then there were renditions of Kitch
classics, among them Sugar Bum Bum and Bee’s
Melody. Junior members of the cast took their
places behind the steel instruments loaned by
Phase II Pan Groove, and supported by their
rhythm section and directed by Reddon, they
rendered a sweet, simple version of Roberts’ Tay
Lay Lay.

Sonatas Steelband Launch - Method to the Madness

New
York - In spite of the steady drizzle and dark overcast skies, the bands came out to play. One by one they arrived: Pan Ambassadors, Despers USA, Harmony, ADLIB, CASYM, Pantonic, Steel Sensation, Sesame Flyers and others were all slated to perform. In addition supporters and fans continued to turn up at the East New York venue.
Unfortunately, there was no overhead covering or roof that would have allowed the program to proceed as scheduled. It was not until well after 9:00 p.m. and the rain held up briefly, that Sonatas opened the show, to be followed by Pan Ambassadors and ADLIB. The show went on.

Whenever you bring three past New York panorama

reigning champion, Sonatas - together in the
same setting, you are going to get a memorable
music experience. Also, added to the mix and not
be left out was the young Higher Levin Steel
Orchestra. Tradition, pride and protocol demand
that no panorama champ ever give anything less
than an outstanding performance - less they risk
getting their feelings hurt and cast into
‘panman purgatory.’

Steel drum band raises

Arizona, USA
- The 20 members of Prescott's
Pandemonium Steel Drum Band are like a big happy
family that makes big happy music.
"We started it as a family band in 2002 with
just me, my husband, mother, daughter and son,"
said Sharon Nordyke, band director and driving
force behind the band's success. "We had a
handful of drums, and we bought more instruments
and it just kept growing."
At 7 p.m. Saturday, the band members and their
congas, timbales, djembes, steel pans, drum set,
and xylophone take the stage at the historic
Elks Opera House, 117 E. Gurley St., in

Notting Hill Carnival
moves Panorama from Hyde Park

England
- This year's Notting Hill Carnival steel
band competition will not be held in Hyde Park
due to a lack of funds.
Organisers said the Panorama event on 28 August
would be held in Horniman's Pleasance Park
instead as the budget had been cut from £150,000
to £30,000.
Carnival director Chris Boothman said this would
make it more difficult to find sponsors for the
contest.
The Panorama, which began in 1978, is one of the

Cariwest ready to ‘bring
the party’
Edmonton
festival celebrates Caribbean arts, culture
|
Alberta,
Canada - Forget your dawdling floats and
plodding marches — the Cariwest Caribbean arts
festival parade promises to be a bustling
brouhaha.
“Every parade is marching, bup, bup, bup, bup,
bup,” said founder Cecil George, mimicking slow,
laboured steps. “We bring the party.”
This is the 26th Cariwest festival, which
celebrates Caribbean arts and culture. The
weekend kicks off Friday with a costume
extravaganza at the Jubilee Auditorium. Saturday
at noon a carnival parade will make its way
through downtown from 108th Street and Jasper
Avenue to Sir Winston Churchill Square Saturday
at noon.
George said he started the festival to spice up
a dull city.
“Edmonton was dead, so I thought, ‘we’ve got to
get some Caribbean flavour in here to make it
alive.’”

food and music were the order of the day. Yes,
there was healthy competition, but the day’s
