“The Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture,
reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity
with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra
fielding between one hundred and one hundred
twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband
music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Steeldrum legacy: Santa
Fe South group performs at Tri-State
|
Oklahoma,
USA
- Like a cool
Caribbean breeze, the sounds of steel
drums wafted through the halls of
Northern Oklahoma College Enid Thursday.
The 14 members of the
Santa Fe South High School Steeldrum
Corps, from Oklahoma City, performed at
Tri-State Music Festival.
A quartet kicked off
the performance with “Pachelbel’s Canon
in D.” Then the full band stepped in to
play “Tobago Jam” by Len Sharp, a piece
composed specifically for steel drums.
After that, the group played “Speak
Softly, Love,” by Nino Rota — the love

concert aims to raise money for steel drums
|
Maryland,
USA
- Hereford Zone
residents can enjoy the sounds of the
Caribbean without an expensive trip to a
tropical island as Hereford Middle
School’s steel drum band will play a
free concert May 20.
The concert is
followed by an evening of 20 bingo games
with prizes as band members try to raise
money to buy more steel drums, also
called pans.
“We’ve never had a
fundraiser, but I have to turn too many
kids away because we don’t have the
equipment,” said Chris Bennett, who
started the after-school steel band in
2008.
Eighth-grader Bethany
Guthall said she’s happy to have made
the band all three years at Hereford
Middle.
“I probably know 20
songs by now,” she said during a break
from rehearsing Bob Marley” “Jamming.”
“I usually get nervous right when we
start to perform, but once we start
playing and people start clapping, it’s
great.”

Meet the artist
[steelpan]: Tom Berich
|
Indiana USA
- Tom Berich
is accustomed to the misconceptions
about his instrument of choice, the
steel pan drum.
The distinctive, jangly sound is closely
tied to Caribbean music. Most people
assume the instrument came from Jamaica
and was invented with reggae music.
But Berich has to correct them every
time.
“It is common to hear it being lumped in
to any ‘island’ culture,” he said.
“Frequently I am asked to play pans at a
luau, which is Polynesian — not even the
same ocean and quite literally the other
side of the world.”

Pan on the move in
Siparia
|
Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I. -
In an attempt to revive the cultural
landscape of Siparia, the Diatonic Steel
Orchestra and Pan Institute will hold
its first ever Single Pan-on-the-Move
competition in the Prime Minister’s
constituency on May 14. The competition,
which will be held in collaboration with
the Siparia Regional Corporation and Pan
Trinbago, will see a total of 15 bands
vying for $100,000 in cash prizes.
Diatonic’s director/manager Keith Byer
said the objective was for the
competition to become an annual event,
similar to what obtains in the Point
Fortin Borough celebration....He said
they hoped the pan competition would
help to attract more visitors to the
community, increase economic activities,
promote internal tourism, while
instilling a sense of pride and
celebrating their indigenous heritage.

Panmen to collect $1.5m
this week
|
Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I. -
Some $1.5 million will be paid to panmen
this week. Pan Trinbago has been at the
centre of controversy following the
failure of payment of stipends to panmen
for the 2011 Panorama season. However,
the T&T Guardian learnt a number of
issues contributed to the delay.
Officials said poor organisation and
registration errors are among the
factors to be blamed for the late
payout. “It was not Pan Trinbago’s fault
as the organisation was waiting on funds
to pay panmen. In addition, some steel
bands were too delinquent in sending in
their registration forms,” an official
revealed. The panmen have been up in
arms over the non-payment of the $1,000
stipend. The contentious issue saw Pan
Trinbago and the Minister of Arts and
Multiculturalism Winston Gypsy Peters
locking horns during the Carnival season
as a decision was taken to reduce the
payment from $1,000 to $800.

Opa-locka students perform at FMU steel pan festival
Students from Dr. Robert B. Ingram in Opa-locka performed at a steel band festival at Florida Memorial University
|
Florida, USA
-
When Romer Ferguson first saw someone play a steel pan, the 9-year-old thought the instrument was fake.
“I thought they were just moving their hands and the music was coming from somewhere else,” he said. “But then I played it and I saw it was real.”
Romer and four other students from Dr. Robert B. Ingram Elementary made real music again on April 20 at a youth steel band festival at Florida Memorial University.
The festival, founded in 2002, featured steel pan musicians from the university and other schools in Miami-Dade and Key West.
The event not only highlighted the melodious music of the steel pan itself, but also marked the growth of the steel pan after-school program at Dr. Robert B. Ingram Elementary in Opa-locka.

Trinidad

Pan, sweet pan, was the highlight on the
evening of April 15 in the cultural
capital of T&T—Point Fortin. Glorious
Steel marked the launch of the Pan On
The Move programme for the upcoming
annual Borough Day celebrations. From as
early as 6 pm police blocked off the
Southern Main Road, as a large
contingent of pan fanatics from across
the nation gathered. The event featured
five sizzling stage sides rendering a
compilation of soca, calypso, R&B and
classical music. The bands included
Point Fortin Tornadoes, NLCB Fonclaire,
San City Steel Orchestra, Carib
Woodbrook Playboyz and Trinidad Valley
Harps.
The crew from San
City kicked off the night with a
wonderful rendition of Explainer’s
Lorraine, which had members of other
bands jumping to the music.....Trinidad
Valley Harps showed that it, too, could
perform big hits, as it executed a
beautiful rendition of Lionel Richie’s
All Night Long.

Ministry Moves to Protect
Steel Pan
|
Trinidad &
Tobago, W.I.
- The Intellectual Property Office (IPO)
of the Ministry of Legal Affairs (MLA)
has moved swiftly to defend against
another attempt in the United States of
America to secure patent rights for the
steel pan.
It has recently come to the attention of
the MLA, through attorneys in the United
States that a challenge was made since
October against a previous ruling which
preserved the right of pan manufacturers
to make and distribute the national
instrument. If successful, the challenge
would place a legal bar against
manufacture and export of the steel pan
into the United States.
Immediately upon learning of this
development however, the Minister of
Legal Affairs, Honourable Prakash
Ramadhar, consulted with the Attorney
General and gave approval for lawyers in
the US to file a defense with the United
States Patents and Trademarks Office (USPTO).

Out of pain this culture was born - The Steelband of Trinidad & Tobago

Global
- Out of the pain of slavery, indentureship, colonialism and imperialism and through continuing resistance to the causes of that pain, the working class in a tiny polyglot island in the Southern Caribbean created and shaped a culture central to which is this transcendent phenomenon called Pan - at once an instrument and a movement. The story of Pan, therefore, is a story of a movement of people up from forced labour, through colonialism and the false dawn of petty bourgeois nationalism toward genuine emancipation/human liberation.

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- For almost two
decades under the management of Nestor
Sullivan, the Pamberi Steel Orchestra
has brought the people of Japan the
sweet sounds of T&T’s national
instrument. Today, even after Japan’s
devastating earthquake that wreaked
havoc in the northern part of the
country, Sullivan assured, earthquake or
not... his band will continue waving the
flag of T&T culture high in Japan. “It
is not just about having a steel band
that plays in Japan. We have developed a
very close affinity with the people of
Japan and they also hold us dear to them
and in high esteem,” explained Sullivan.

Clement extraordinary
hero of 12-bass
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Dennis Clement is
no ordinary pan player. He is truly
extraordinary. He plays the 12-bass for
Solo Harmonites, and celebrates 40 years
as a folk hero in the pan world. It’s an
achievement he’s proud of, and intends
to build upon. People come from around
the world to watch him play and he
entertains them with fancy footwork and
deft pan skills. He is a joy to watch.
Once he enters the cavern of the 12-bass
he’s on stage “executing the moves of
Ray Charles, Stevie wonder and James
Brown,” yes, James Brown. Clement
maintains an equilibrium and a joie de
vivre no one can take away...and don’t
try. He credits Knolly Bobb for the
12-bass idea which today has brought him
fame and immense joy. “The pan has
served me,” he says, unashamedly.
