Celebration of Women
Tribute To Women In Pan
Iman Pascall, almost eighteen years old, is in her final year at the Science Skills Center High School in New York. The star pannist began playing at the age of 4, which was the start of her never-ending love for music and the steel pan instrument. She has participated in 10 Brooklyn panoramas, including a winning year with Pantonic Steel Orchestra in 2001 under the arrangement of master musician Clive Bradley. Over the years Iman has played with several other New York steel orchestras including Metro, Women in Steel, Crossfire and Moods Pan Groove.
Her panorama experience is not limited to New York. The youthful but star veteran Pan musician has also participated in 9 panoramas in the mecca of Pan, Trinidad and Tobago. She shared the glory of winning at the "Big Yard" aka the Queen's Park Savannah with the legendary Desperadoes Steel Orchestra in 2000, and most recently with Phase 2 Pan Groove in 2005 under the arrangement of Len "Boogsie" Sharpe.
Iman has always adroitly incorporated the pan with her academics by playing at numerous school functions. The list of musical greats she has come of age under includes Jeffrey "Jeffers" Pierre, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, Ray Holman, Brian Sandy and more. In 2004 she also took part in in the World Musical Festival as a soloist and as a member of Women in Steel, with musical arrangements done by Freddy Harris, III. The 6th Annual Moods of Pan in Antigua has also been another stop on the circuit of her professional performances. Iman was part of the Women In Steel contingent which flew from New York to the island of Antigua in November of 2005.
Unique Sounds Ablest is the musical organization with which Iman is currently involved. She also joins one of her mentors, Jeffrey Pierre, in teaching the steel pan at various schools in New York such as Medgar Evers Middle College High school located in Brooklyn.
The fall of 2005 will find Iman
Pascall furthering her own education via a full 4-year scholarship as one of
the students in the Berklee
College of Music program. To date
her other accomplishments include a 1st place award in the 2004
Female Single Tenor Pan Competition, a scholarship to the Brooklyn College
Preparatory Center for Performing Arts, 1st place in the Soloist
competition organized by "Something Positive", and an Award for Excellence
in Music from the Music Educators Association in 1998. She has also
been inducted into the CUNY Hall of Fame for Music. Iman had
also won a 4-year college scholarship for music to Indiana State University
and Florida Memorial College Music.
