Vanessa Sets The
Stage Roseau, Dominica - The sounds of steelpan began Friday night as visiting prize-winning pannist, Trinidadian Vanessa Headley set the stage for what was to come on Sunday afternoon. The venue was the waterfront Fort Young hotel located in Roseau, Dominica's capital. On Friday evenings, it is a much-sought after nightspot as people unwind after a week's work, or simply relax in anticipation of the upcoming weekend.
This Friday was just a bit different.
The hotel's scheduled act was on hand to perform, but patrons
were also treated to Ms. Headley's steelpan talents. Pan Trinbago's Denise Hernandez introduced Ms. Headley to the crowd.
And then all attention turned to the teenage pannist. On her double
seconds, Ms. Headley executed select familiar musical pieces to the
delight of the crowd present.
As some guests enjoyed barbecue offerings, drinks, and the cool sea air, others got up and danced to the steelband music. Ms. Headley was warmly received by those present, and provided a taste of what was to come on Sunday. Some of those who were on hand to experience Ms. Headley's performance, no doubt took up the invitation extended by Ms. Hernandez on behalf of the event organizers, to witness the steelband competition on Sunday April 30 at the country's Botanical Gardens.
