Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille win `Spirit of Emancipation' award

Courts Sound Specialists of Laventille has copped the `Spirit of Emancipation' award among conventional steelbands participating in the recently concluded sixth annual Laventille Steelband Festival Street Parade.

Led by Wayne Scipio, Sound Specialists, which hails from Eastern Quarry Laventille, secured the title for yet another year. The band chose African garb as its uniform, at the Festival held on Sunday, August 6. The Festival is designed to coincide with the Emancipation observance.

Sound Specialists won favour with the panel of adjudicators to capture the award at the Festival, staged by the Laventille Steelband Festival Committee.

Port-of-Spain based Harlem Syncopators took home the top accolade among Single Pan Bands in this segment of the popular steelband street parade.  A new feature of the Festival was the creation of an award for the Best Flag bearer.

At the end of the event legendary conventional steel orchestra Harmonites, from Churchill Roosevely Highway, Barataria, walked away with the prize.  These champion bands contributed significantly to the musical out-put at the massive steelband street parade, which took place from Mc Allister Street, heading east to Leon Street, Laventille.

Twenty-four steelbands - including reigning National Panorama champion Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove and World Steelband Music Festival winner Sagicor Exodus - displayed their musical wares along the route.

Once again, the organising committee paid tribute to the sons and daughters of Laventille who have contributed to the development of the district.  They were: pan pioneer Oscar Pile, for Contribution to the Development of the Steelband; former National netballer Enid Brown for Community Service; Eloy Burge for Community Service; soca entertainer Destra Garcia for Culture; Tricia J Hudlin, education; and Crystal Rogers for sport.

Among the specially invited guest at this year`s Festival were President George Maxwell Richard and First Lady Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards; Culture Minister Joan Yuille-Williams; Energy Minister Eric Williams; MP Fitzgerald Hinds and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.
