Specialists of Laventille win `Spirit of Emancipation' award
Courts Sound Specialists of
Laventille has copped the `Spirit of Emancipation' award among conventional
steelbands participating in the recently concluded sixth annual Laventille
Steelband Festival Street Parade.
Led by Wayne Scipio, Sound Specialists, which hails from Eastern Quarry
Laventille, secured the title for yet another year. The band chose African
garb as its uniform, at the Festival held on Sunday, August 6. The Festival
is designed to coincide with the Emancipation observance.

Sound Specialists won favour with the
panel of adjudicators to capture the award at the Festival, staged by the
Laventille Steelband Festival Committee.
Port-of-Spain based Harlem Syncopators took home the top accolade among
Single Pan Bands in this segment of the popular steelband street parade.
A new feature of the Festival was the creation of an award for the Best Flag
bearer.
At the end of the event legendary conventional steel orchestra Harmonites,
from Churchill Roosevely Highway, Barataria, walked away with the prize.
These champion bands contributed significantly to the musical out-put at the
massive steelband street parade, which took place from Mc Allister Street,
heading east to Leon Street, Laventille.
Twenty-four steelbands - including reigning National Panorama champion
Petrotrin Phase II Pan Groove and World Steelband Music Festival winner
Sagicor Exodus - displayed their musical wares along the route.
Once again, the organising committee paid tribute to the sons and daughters
of Laventille who have contributed to the development of the district.
They were: pan pioneer Oscar Pile, for Contribution to the Development of
the Steelband; former National netballer Enid Brown for Community Service;
Eloy Burge for Community Service; soca entertainer Destra Garcia for
Culture; Tricia J Hudlin, education; and Crystal Rogers for sport.
Among the specially invited guest at this year`s Festival were President
George Maxwell Richard and First Lady Dr. Jean Ramjohn Richards; Culture
Minister Joan Yuille-Williams; Energy Minister Eric Williams; MP Fitzgerald
Hinds and Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.
