 Sixth Annual
Laventille Steelband Festival
honours Destra Garcia

Laventille, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.

Saturday July 30, 2005

The awards presentation is part of the grand steelband parade held on the same day, which takes place between Mc Allister and Leon Streets, Laventille from 4 PM.

Destra Garcia will receive her accolade in the junior category for her contribution to culture.

Destra is the lead singer with popular soca music band Atlantik, who over the years, has entertained music lovers the world over, with hits such as "Fly" "Tremble It," as well as "Bonnie and Clyde." The latter musical selection was a duet with Machel Montano.

Organised by the Laventille Steelband Festival Committee 2005, under the chairmanship of Michael Cooper, the awards ceremony is a feature of the six year-old LSF Pan Parade.

Other junior award recipients are Crystal Rogers for sport; Tricia Hudlin, education; and Eloy Burge for Community Service.

Adult awards will be presented pan pioneer Oscar Pile, for his contribution to steelband development; former national netballer Enid Brown for community service; and school principal Phillip Marcelle also for community service.

The organising body increased the number of adults awards from two, in previous years, to three in 2005.

Julien Cudjoe, deputy chairman of the Festival committee said: "Laventille boast a wealth of heroes and it is only fitting that an event such as the Festival honour its sons and daugthers. Crime might have placed Laventille in the news negatively, but this vibrant community has scores of positive news makers all of whom we aim to promote."

Past recipients of the prestigious community (adult) awards include Merle Albino-De Coteau, Bertie Marshall, pan maker/tuner Herman "Guppy" Brown, Makandal Dagga, Christina Barrat, Lystra Penny, Stephenson Westfield, Venita Gretton, as well as former Pan Trinbago presidents Sydney Gallop, Roy Augustus and Arnim Smith.

The list of previous youth awardees boast names as Russell Latapy, Candice Scott, Pillar Mc Shine, Ulric Boxhill, Ian Mc Aulley, Ben Jackson, Kareem Brown, the Pierre Sisters Ronaldo Rollock, Giselle Stephen, Shannon Paul and Carlton Neptune.
