A New York Original

The name 'Desperadoes' is a valued and respected member in the lexicon of steelband music.  As with many of the Desperadoes family of steel orchestras - expectations are high and accomplishments are many and significant.  Nowhere is this more evident than in New York City, where no less than four major New York orchestras can trace their roots and associations back to the Trinidad and Tobago-based famed orchestra.

Despers USA is the oldest New York-based offshoot of the legendary Desperadoes Steel Orchestra.  It was established in the mid 70's by former musicians of Desperadoes Steel Orchestra who had migrated to the USA.  In a relatively short time the orchestra distinguished itself with distinctive performances and its style of sound.

Other members of the New York-Desperadoes-family member connection include but are not limited to - Metro Steel Orchestra, D'Radoes Steel Orchestra and Pantonic Steel Orchestra.  They have successful music portfolios - but it is only Despers USA that holds the distinction of winning seven consecutive steelband music panoramas (1993 through 1997) - a world panorama record.

In spite of it's impressive panorama winning streak, Despers USA cannot be limited to or defined by, steelband panorama music competitions.  It's stage side is equally formidable as is their musicianship, repertoire, performance style and sound, and they have often challenged the boundaries of what is expected of a steel orchestra.  Indeed, the recognized Despers USA 'touch' is reminiscent of the golden era of Desperadoes which made them a world-famous orchestra.  The New York music organization's reputation is a hallmark and model in instructing musicians in the finer details of mastering the instrument.  In addition to this, Despers USA is in the unique position of having fielded from time to time, some of the more notable and heralded personalities in the history of the steelband art form.

Basement Recordings captured the performance of Despers USA at the historic "Reflections In Steel Concert" at Brooklyn College's Whitman Theatre on December 21, 2001.  The performance showcases the celebrated and characteristic Despers USA style of sound.
