New
Dimension Steel Orchestra
New
Dimension Steel Orchestra was formed in March of 1988 by a group
of young people living in
St. George’s,
the capital of Grenada.
From inception,
the band signaled that it would be a tremendous musical
force - for in just six months New Dimension Steel Orchestra was
able to capture the National Panorama Championship –
Grenada’s most prestigious Steelband Music award. This achievement was very
significant considering that the band was un-sponsored and
only had in its possession some second-hand instruments.
New Dimension is undoubtedly one of Grenada’s most dynamic
steel orchestras having amassed an impressive track record.
Out of 18 appearances in the National Panorama Championships,
the band has won eight times in 1988, 1989, 1992, 1995,
1996, 2002, 2003 and 2009, and placed second in 1994, 1999,
2004, 2006, 2007
and 2008,
and third in 1990 and 1998.
In 2001 the band
placed 3rd in the first ever Caribbean
Panorama Championship, only narrowly being defeated by two
bands from Trinidad. In 2002 New Dimension
placed sixth in the World Steel Band Music Festival having
only had one month to prepare.
New Dimension
Steel Orchestra is responsible for assisting eight
schools involved in the Steel Band music program in Grenada,
and is also one of the island’s leading entertainment groups,
performing weekly at several top national hotels and on cruise ships.
The band has been featured in the movie ‘White Squall’ and has
appeared in several documentaries on Grenada’s Tourism
Industry.
