We at Basement Recordings have been extremely fortunate, to
have been able to rub shoulders and work with the world's most gifted, talented
and renowned composers / arrangers / producers of steelband music. These
musical titans are known and recognized by single names. You have only to
mention - Bradley, Boogsie, Pelham, Jit, Professor, Greenidge and Smooth to name a
few - for immediate recognition. Of equal value, has been our ability to
capture the world's première steel orchestras in the heat of the competition
season.
There are few musical competitions that are as fierce, intense and mean so much
to fans, participants and competitors alike. We at Basement
Recordings have captured much
more than mere 'great' recordings. The emotions, the sacrifices and the humanity
and legacy of a people - in their relentless travail to control their environment, through their music
- enhance the quality of life not only in their own midst but
throughout the universe. In this series we concentrate on the bands of New
York where the steelband has become the instrument and voice of ordinary people.
The New York
steelband music experience is part of the legacy and
relentless drive to excel, which began the
day the man who first brought the Steelpan to America -
Rudy King (who has since
passed) - introduced the instrument to the North American continent.
That legacy and drive live on today. Now, these recordings stand as testaments to
the greatness of a people - as do the Great Pyramids. Ordinary people did and
do, unimaginably great things. Indeed,
from the Pyramids to the Pan...
