University, in conjunction with the Department of Music,
University of Georgia, is requesting proposals for a symposium:
Emergent Business Enterprises: Steelbands in Educational, Religious
and Community Institutions, to be held at Clark Atlanta
University, Atlanta, Georgia, April 17-19, 2008.
The Emergent Business Enterprises
Symposium is an excellent opportunity for steel drum bands in
educational institutions (elementary, middle and high schools,
colleges and universities,) churches and community organizations to
share their experiences and learn from the experiences of others.
We are particularly interested in papers presentations by steel drum
band directors and by student members of steelbands. In addition,
12 school steelbands will be invited to perform at the Symposium
Panorama. There will also be a tuning clinic by Trinidad panmaker,
Roland Harrigin, who will discuss the new addition to the pan
family, the G-pan. Other highlights of the symposium include the
keynote address by Dr. Hollis “Chalkdust” Liverpool and the Saturday
evening pan/jazz concert featuring top pan soloists Earl Rodney,
Ken “Professor” Philmore, Andy Narrell and Nicholas Mohan.
For each individual paper or
proposed panel discussion submit a one-page abstract indicating the
title and thesis of the paper or panel. Abstracts should include
name(s), mailing address, e-mail address, phone number and steelband
affiliation of the presenter or panel chair. Steelbands interested
