United Kingdom - The British Association of Steelbands Future Development Forum (BAS FDF) hosted their “Calypsteel Winter Lime” on Sunday 21 December 2008 at Carnival Village Yaa Asantewaa, 1 Chippenham Mews, London W9. It is a new initiative developed by FDF, in partnership with Carnival Village and the Association of British Calypsonians, and the intention was to bring together pan, calypso and parang to celebrate the festive season in true Trini style. Steel bands and Calypsonians play 2 or 3 Christmas carols, plus other songs from their repertoire in a family evening show. FDF Vice Chair, Miles Pascall gave a short speech on the format of the event which was opened by a makeshift FDF steel band that was formed on the evening and learnt their rendition of ‘O Christmas Tree’ musically arranged by FDF Chair, Delphina James a couple of hours earlier. It was a successful effort and everyone is now looking forward to many more appearances from them.
The St. Michaels and All Angels Steelband followed with their melodic renditions. A new member of BAS, this was their first appearance at an association’s event. Freddie Toutesaut and Patrick McKay have developed this group of young musicians into a very enterprising band. Ebony Protogez was next and these young children certainly made everyone in the audience very proud of their performance. The Du Bois sisters must be commended for the outstanding work with their students. Caribbean Steel International (CSI) stole the show with their vibrant delivery of rhythmic renditions and outstanding medley of Xmas songs. Brent Holder and his merry band of musicians had the audience tapping, dancing and singing along on their musical trip. Ebony was last to play in the first round of tunes and they certainly lived up to their name. Their lively renditions were well received by the audience and delivered in true Ebony style. CSI, Ebony and St. Michaels played a second set of tunes with CSI closing the evening with some catchy renditions that once again had the audience out of their seats and dancing. Unfortunately owing to circumstances beyond FDF’s control, no parang or calypso was heard on the evening, but it was still filled with the glorious sounds of steel and the attentive audience who showed their appreciation throughout the evening to all bands enjoyed themselves. Everyone is now looking forward to next year’s event. |
