New York, USA
- Yesterday was an added triple treat - WST (When Steel
Talks) not only got to check out the newly
renovated New York State Theater (David H. Koch Theater) at Lincoln Center but we also got to see one of
our own favorite daughters of pan, Orisha John, perform in the
New York City Opera Orchestra as part of the Fall 2009 program “Opera
is Instrumental.”However, on
this day Ms. John, would
perform as a 1st violinist for the Opera orchestra. And yes,
for those who are unaware, Orisha is an accomplished violinist in addition to her
known deft skills on the family of steelpan instruments. Orisha is an alumni of the
prestigious Juilliard School and a player
for both panorama champion Sonatas Steel Orchestra,
as well as Pantonic Steel Orchestra.
The New York City Opera Orchestra
would be playing ‘Don Giovanni’ by Wolfgang
Amadeus Mozart. This presentation of ‘Opera is Instrumental’ is
part of its program of providing unique educational opportunities for young
musicians.
In addition to the great music and performance it was a
learning experience for the proud parents and friends who made up this audience -
as the orchestra conductor Robert Katkov-Trevino took time to explain a little
background and history, giving insight into the acts performed by the orchestra and professional cast members of
the opera.
The performance was great and the sound sans electronic audio
system was excellent. As part of the renovation of the hall, the previous sound
system was totally scrapped. These musicians who represent the future of
New York City’s performing arts were simply marvelous.
We at When Steel Talks are very fortunate to have been
able to watch Orisha develop from a gifted youngster into a beautiful, talented
intellect.
As for our young panist/violinist - Orisha remains, quiet,
unassuming and humble - while her musical dexterity continues onto further
heights. Those happily on hand (besides WST) to see Orisha perform as part
of the New York City Opera Orchestra included Mack Scott, manager of Sonatas Steel
Orchestra, mom Hazel John and fellow ace musician and panist Sadé Constantine.
