Pan Month continues with more Steel band events

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan Trinbago’s Steelband Month continues with three more events.  They are Defenders of the Pan – Pan Pioneers, Youth Rally and Pan on de Broadwalk.

“Defenders of the Pan” is a talk format show during which steelpan stalwarts reminisce and share their experiences of the days of old.  Here the audience receives insight into the history, most of which are locked away in the minds of the diminishing few.  Speakers include: Hugh “Dasheen” Hackett, Kirton “Eddie Boom” Moore and Claude “Six Kerchiefs” Bryon. This event is carded for Wednesday 15th August at the Renegades Pan Theatre, Charlotte Street, Port of Spain, from 6:00 p.m.

“Youth Day” previously advertised to be held Saturday 18th August, is now rescheduled for Saturday September 29th.  “Youth Day,” as the name implies, is geared to the young folks. The playbill features junior steel ensembles such as St. Margaret’s Boys’, Skiffle Youth Option One, Exocubs, Fonclaire Youth, Old Tech Youth, Renegades Youth and Success Stars Steel Orchestras. The Grand Stand, Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain, is the venue of choice. Admission is free.  Starting time is 1:00 p.m. and runs until 6:00 p.m.

The next event in the month-long program is the rescheduled “Pan on De Broadwalk.”  Participating bands include Scorpion Pan Reflections, Valley Harps and Starlift Steel Orchestra.  The steelband concert was postponed due to inclement weather last Sunday. The event takes place the same venue, The Broadwalk, Chaguaramas, from 4:00 p.m. at a date to be announced.

Last Friday, members of the steelband association, friends and well-wishers joined with the steelband body in honoring 36 persons/companies for their contribution to the development of the national instrument and Pan Trinbago at a gala function at the Festival Ball Room, Crowne Plaza, Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

Other coming events are Pan on de Avenue, Honoring the Icons of Nelson Street, Pan Night & Day and Independence Brunches at various panyards/theatres.

The program culminates on Sunday 23rd September with the highly-anticipated Steelfestt Parade around the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.
