United Kingdom - Plymouth-based steel orchestra Real Steel took several in the UK pan-world by surprise when they copped the 2012 UK Panorama championship title, on what started out as a rainy English evening on Saturday August 25. With a rain-delayed start, the six steel orchestras took their turn on stage in the musical duel which saw last year’s champs Mangrove Steel Band settling in at the second slot.
Real Steel, playing Prophet of Pan sung by Designer and arranged by Leroy Clarke, are first-time winners of the UK Panorama, but have been competing for several years, though they did not appear in the 2011 competition. With 1991 origins as an eight-member youth ensemble known as Estover Steel Band from Plymouth, England – the group evolved into what is today known as Real Steel.
With CSI Steel Band snagging the third spot, veterans and multiple Panorama winners Ebony Steel Orchestra had to be content with fourth position, while Metronomes with Ken “Professor” Philmore as arranger were relegated to fifth place. Croydon Steel Orchestra who played in the final position of the evening, also placed last in the 2012 competition.
