Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan Trinbago Inc. heralds the start of Pan Month 2013 with an Interfaith Church Service and Procession in Port-of-Spain; it is the 21st edition of Pan Trinbago’s Pan Month. The Evangelical Service will be held at the St. Joseph’s Convent Chapel, Abercromby Street, on Sunday August 4 at 11:00 a.m. Members of the Inter Religious Organization will officiate with the homily delivered by Fr. Clyde Harvey. At the service, there will be the blessing of the Flags of the Steel Orchestras; the public is invited.
It was on August 30, 1992 that the steelpan was declared the National Musical Instrument of Trinidad & Tobago and in keeping with this edict, Pan Trinbago recognizes the occasion annually with a number of events with the steelpan as the main focus. This year’s activities run from August 3 to September 1 throughout the country. These include a March for Peace, Pan Jamborees, Seminars, Steelband Concerts and Independence Day Brunches organized by the various Regions of the Pan Trinbago steelband body, communities and individual steel orchestras. See schedule of events.
The “March for Peace” comes off Saturday August 10 at 1:00 p.m. It starts from Morvant Junction, proceeds along the Eastern Main Road into Port-of-Spain, up Abercromby Street, across Duke Street West, and finally into Victoria Square, Park Street (opposite Pan Trinbago’s Head Offices). The initiative was first alluded to at the Northern Region’s prize- giving function, at which Pan Trinbago’s president Keith Diaz appealed to the wider community to “put down their weapons” and encouraged those in authority to “bind together to end violent crime.” Diaz also advanced that “in light of the worsening crime situation, the national instrument should be used as a symbol of peace...” To this end, Pan Trinbago is inviting the pan membership and the country to come out and support its March for Peace.
Other events hosted by Pan Trinbago include: the Visit to the Foundation Stone in St. Paul Street, East Dry River, Port-of-Spain (re-dedication ceremony), and “Bad John Day- Defenders of Pan,” a historical talk shop among the Pioneers of the art form.
This year’s edition will see the addition of two new items on the calendar of events, i.e. a seminar on the topic of “Healthy Living” and another themed “Pan, Patent and Progress” with Everard N. Byer, Patent & Trademark Agent (Patent), Keith Diaz and Bryon Serrette (Progress) and Nestor Sullivan (Pan) - as contributors. The latter takes place at NALIS (National Library and Information System Authority) on August 30.
Steelband Month is the precursor to the Trinidad & Tobago
National Steelband Music Festival –
Pan Is Beautiful XII - which
takes place in October and November.
