Brooklyn, New York, USA - Pan and soca featured prominently at this past weekend’s NBA (National Basketball Association) playoffs action in Brooklyn between the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets. These were match-ups three and four in a ‘best of seven’ series, with the first two games played on the Raptors’ home court.
Inside the 17,700-plus capacity sold-out Barclays Center Arena, Bunji Garlin’s “Differentology” pulsated throughout the arena over the sound system toward the end of the first of the two game days - April 25 - as the Brooklyn Nets secured a victory over the visiting Toronto Raptors.
Only a few hours earlier the steelpan instrument was being featured prominently, welcoming all. The stage side of New York 2013 Panorama champions CASYM Steel Orchestra performed at the entrance of the Barclays Center Arena as thousands streamed into the venue to catch the heated match-up between the Nets and the Raptors.
As the teams warmed up on the floor inside the arena, CASYM warmed up attendees with their repertoire before they filed in. They danced on the periphery surrounding the band, while others stood around to see the band in action, some taking pictures and video.
After game four on April 27 it eventually turned out to be a win-one, lose-one scenario for the Brooklyn Nets on their home turf, with the Raptors evening the series up to this point. However it was a win-win for CASYM as they proudly flaunted the flag of Pan and their own talents for thousands and thousands to behold on both days, while making their way into the arena on cool but sunny Spring afternoons in New York.
