birdsong steel orchestra salutes the contribution of Ainsley Mark

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - birdsong joins the rest of the steelband movement and other community-based organizations in recognizing the life work of Ainsley Mark who passed away on Wednesday August 20, 2014. Ainsley was a tower of strength in our community who was able to contribute to the success of the hundreds of students whom he taught at the University of the West Indies, the host of business ventures that he advised and the long list of community-based organizations like ours to which he provided quiet, consistent support.

birdsong is proud and grateful to be counted among the wide range of beneficiaries of his professional advice which he so willingly put at the disposal of our organization from its inception in 1973. In most cases, his support was unsolicited but always greatly appreciated – ranging from very practical advice on managing our finances and business operations to external audit services.

While we are deeply appreciative of the tangible support that he has so selflessly provided to our organization, we attach the highest value to the many opportunities that he provided us to learn from his tireless and very structured pursuit of the objective of building resilient, self–reliant community-based organizations.  Ainsley was the embodiment of the spirit of community service – always willing and available to expose organizations like ours to his considerable talents in the fields of teaching and management of the education system, mentorship, community organization, business and financial management consulting and event promotion.

We join his family, professional colleagues and other beneficiaries of his wisdom, his generosity, his vision, his leadership and, above all, his passionate love for and commitment to the steelband movement. In so doing, we certainly take comfort in the fact that he has gone to rest with the knowledge that his cherished QRC (Queen’s Royal College) Restoration project has been substantially completed. This project defines the life work of Ainsley Mark and the mark that he now leaves so indelibly engraved into our hearts and minds.

May his soul rest in peace and may his legacy illuminate the paths of generations to come.
