Sounds of Trinidad fill amphitheater tonight

Cassie Pence
June 21, 2004

Pan is a finely tuned steel drum from Trinidad. Jumbie is a Caribbean word for a mischievous spirit. Collide those two words at the Ford Amphitheater in the form of a seven-member calypso-style band, and you have the energy and excitement of a Trinidad carnival.

By When Steel Talks

An intimate and well-attended VIP reception was held earlier on today in the Rhum Lounge at New York's Negril restaurant located in the trendy downtown "Village" area.  The meet-and-greet session for the Father's Day June 20th Steelpan Jazz Concert, billed as "An Acoustic Revolution", was a well-attended, three-hour affair.  It featured several of the artists who would perform at Sunday's event, including ADLIB Steel Orchestra, Andy Narell, Garvin Blake, Buddy  Williams and Gary Haase.  Both Liam Teague and Arturo Tappin were slated to fly into New York later on in the evening, and were therefore unable to attend.

Greensleeves Records releases Rhythm album compilation disc to Blue Steel rhythm

The Greensleeves Rhythm Album series continues to unleash the latest in Jamaican dancehall rhythms. The Blue Steel is #55 in the Greensleeves Rhythm Album series.

Blue Steel, with its mixture of steel pan and bass heavy drum beats, is riddled with Caribbean flavour and looks set to become a winner this summer.

The beat was produced by Frenchie, the talented producer at the helm of Maximum Sounds who has worked with some of
Jamaica's finest artistes and who produced rhythms such as Jedi, Ice, Chizzle and Jumbie.

The compilation features some of the most consistent names from the dancehall genre. Among them are Vybz Kartel, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Ward 21, Mr Lexx, Ce'Cile, Kip Rich, Junior Kelly, Lukie D, Red Rat and Mad Anju. Anthony B, Future Troubles, Taz and Wayne Marshall are also featured.

BP Renegades mesmerise with their versatility
Web Posted - Fri Jun 11 2004
By David Hinkson

It is often said that Barbadians run from rain at the slightest opportunity, but the patrons at the opening night of the sixth Barbados Pan Festival dispelled that myth last weekend. The Trinidadian steel orchestra BP Renegades held the audience at the Sunbury Plantation House so firmly in their grasp that instead of running, the patrons stayed glued to their seats and merely put up umbrellas when a heavy shower of rain fell during their first set.
