history and development of the steelpan
will be on
exhibition and for sale by
private

This collection
was exhibited during last

About The Artist - Joseph Charles
Joseph Aldwin Charles
was born January 1948 in Penal, San Francique, Trinidad. When
his family
moved to Toco, he completed his primary education at Cumana Toco Seven-Day Adventist Primary School.
It was here that he gained an appreciation of what would become his

Mint Condition & Pan
Minnesota - Taking a
break from practice to tell their story, the musicians laugh about
their origins as a teen band jamming in the shadow of Prince,
complete with heavy Jheri curls. "You'd have to sit there and
interview us with a raincoat," says O'Dell.
"That made the funk more better, man," says
Williams. "Something greasy."
Stokley
Williams and Homer O'Dell met in a steel drum class taught at
Central by Trinidad-born Cliff Alexis Sr., and the bright plink of
the pans can be heard on Mint Condition tracks such as "My Sista"
and "Look Whachu Done 2 Me." Alexis had taught Williams since the
singer was a kid, and had known O'Dell for years as well. Soon all
three were playing in the school's Steel Experience band.

Jamaica Observer
The
other side of - Principal Grace Smith The heartbeat of Trench Town High
By Camille Taylor Observer writer
Jamaica -
In the early days of her teaching
career she copped a silver medal for choreography in the Jamaica
Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC's) festival of the
performing arts.
However, her
greatest artistic triumph to date is the founding of the Trench Town
High School steel band, in 1993.
"We were the first school to really take up the steel band and from
there others like Camperdown, Immaculate, Meadowbrook and Vaz Prep
got on board," she says.
Smith also institutes lunchtime practice sessions for the band so
the wider school community can hear the music. "The children love
it. It removes the tension, it lifts, it energises, it's just
great."
And the band has not only been a vehicle for Smith to give her
students cultural exposure. She has also ensured that her young
musicians use their talent to earn a living.
"A lot of those students are now able to teach steel pan," says
Sandra Brown, a past student, who is now a teacher at Trench Town
High. "Some of them are now working as musicians even in hotels on
the North Coast." Full Story

Steel Dreams,
A Community Steel Drum Orchestra
Maine -
Steel drums have quickly evolved to be some of the
most versatile around. Debbie Anderson, Steel Dreams member,
remarked that "you can play any kind of music on these instruments."
That was certainly illustrated at the festival where Steel Industry,
a high school band from Yarmouth, Maine, played "Stayin' Alive," and
Blazing Sun Steel Orchestra, the host band from Bates College,
played a movement of a Beethoven symphony.
Meanwhile, Carl Chase, artistic grandfather of the pan movement in
New England, conducted his band, Flash in the Pan, in a world
premiere of his own "Overture for Steel Orchestra." This piece
illustrated the amazing ability of a steel orchestra to produce
clear rhythm, lyrical melody, and wide-ranging tone colors.

Steelband Slipping Away
Trinidad -
THE EDITOR: I HAD hoped for some time that at
least the steelband movement would be the catalyst to reaffirm our
being as a unique people with much to offer the outside world. Our
Carnival had become a caricature of Brazil's Carnival, our theatre
offers us Porgy and Bess, our economy almost wholly dependent on
offshore activity, our education system concerned only with
certification.
Our steelband was the only institution that
offered some hope. It was not long ago that our steelbands reached
and touched our very being. We could not contain ourselves with the
inner joy that its music elicited from our very soul.
If we lose our authentic steelband culture, what
hope is there left for us to forge our own identity as a people?

Musician to perform Caribbean

-
Stanley Dahl, a freelance percussionist and
educator will be an artist-in-residence at several Council Bluffs
School District elementary schools on May 9 and 10.
Dahl's concerts are known for audience
participation, and he has been extremely successful with young audiences
who are currently interested in Caribbean sounds along with a new
popularity in drums of all kinds, according to information provided by the
Bluffs Arts Council.
The distinctive sound of the steel drum
can have a profound effect on listeners. It conjures images of pristine
Caribbean islands with warm sun, blue skies, blue water and calm, quiet
white-sand beaches.
Dahl says although a lack of familiarity
with traditional dance styles like calypso, mambo and salsa can initially
stifle audience participation, the combination to get up and move
definitely catches on.

Festival of the Arts goes ahead on Brac
By Nicky Watson
Cayman Islands-
The show must go on, as they say. On Cayman Brac
last Saturday 30 April, the show was the Festival of the Arts, normally
an annual event to showcase winners in the national competition.
This year, however, the Competition did not take place – one of the
casualties of Ivan – but the Principals of the schools on the Brac
decided to continue the tradition of a show to display the talents of
the children on the Sister Islands to the community, and give the
children the opportunity to express themselves in the performing arts.
Among the performances of choirs, dance groups and poetry, the Cayman
Brac High School Steel Pan Group was one of the favourites of the
audience. There are about 45 regular players in the school, said CBHS
Music Teacher Penny Thompson.

Big Splash
Robinson Ballet puts on another grand performance
Review by Nan Lincoln
Maine -
It began with the uplifting "Flying High," in which the dancers were
transformed into kite flyers, their colorful kites and the playful winds
that kept them aloft.
There
was all sorts of swirling, twirling, skipping and leaping while the
steel band banged, rattled and clanged out an appropriate and fun
calypso beat. Even without the program in hand, Maureen Lynch's
choreography was so evocative that anyone who had ever flown a kite
couldn't have missed her metaphors of motion.
As great as the Planet Pan sound was, I was concerned that a full show
of that percussive sound and driving beat might be a bit jarring. Those
fears were laid to rest when the ensemble performed a delicate and
delightful version of the "Sleeping Beauty Suite" that made one forget
the tune was being hammered out on steel.

"Steel pan is the newest percussion instrument in the

A graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Mosca provides the

"I fullfill the band's musical needs," explains this quiet-spoken young

By KATHIE DICKERSON
COSHOCTON, Ohio -
Things came to life on the courtsquare as sunshine warmed the grass
and festive music played during the lunchtime hour Wednesday.
The River View High School Caribbean Drum Ensemble performed as part
of the annual Dogwood Festival.
Matt Hayes, a River View High School graduate who is now directing the
group, was a member of the first ensemble in 2000.
"I think Mr. (Tom) McLeish started it because he studied percussion in
school," he said. "Plus it's a fun thing to do, and kids are always
looking for something else to do."
When Hayes was in the band there were 11 members. This year 20 young
people are in the group.
Interest has definitely grown.
"This is the first year it's been really big, so we'll see next year,"
he said.
Members in the band usually practice a couple of hours each week

Jazz Back In Harlem -
A Steelpan Affair The Garvin Blake Quintet
at the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant In Review
Harlem, New York - In the stomping grounds
of where just one name of the jazz greats are needed - i.e. Bird, Max,
Miles, Coltrane, Dizzy, Basie and Duke among
others -
Garvin Blake and his quintet brought us back to an era when jazz and
blues reigned supreme uptown, in Harlem. The group is also known
as the Garvin Blake Ensemble, and Garvin Blake and Friends. The
much-anticipated gig has been the buzz of the town the last few days as
NYC jazz fans scurried to get advance tickets to the show.
Sunday's Pan Jazz event at the restaurant was completely
sold-out.
The
Uptown crowd at the Renaissance Restaurant was not disappointed.
Garvin Blake and his complement of stellar musicians (Frankie McIntosh,
Damon Duewhite, Calvin Jones and Tony Cedras) in their own right, moved
with the spirit of the great ones as they treated the audience to a jazz
music performance that was befitting of the historical musical
significance of hallowed Harlem ground they were on... This
capacity crowd was treated to a special moment.

The Garvin

plays to a sell-out crowd
Harlem,
New York -
An anxious crowd was seated at the
Uptown Renaissance Restaurant on 116th Street in Harlem for what
promised to be a special Sunday evening with a difference. Quite a few
had come in from "out of town" because they heard that the Garvin Blake
Quintet was making its appearance at the Harlem establishment. For
some, they looked forward to revisiting the musical combination that had so
wowed them on Father's Day last year, at the Lincoln Center's Alice Tully
Hall, when the quintet had performed there. From that show, and
joining steel pannist Garvin (on double seconds) at this performance, were
Frankie McIntosh on keyboards, Tony Cedras on accordion, and
Calvin Jones on bass. Renowned percussionist Damon Duewhite
who is also part of Garvin Blake's regular retinue, rounded out the group.
Others patrons were music lovers with a taste for anything jazz; and came
out for an experience which promised to be at least intriguing.

fortunate from time to time, to rub shoulders with these elite few.
Today we focus on another icon who is part of that infinitesimally
small list of people, who would be great in any era - any season -
any place - any capacity. Moreover, they did not seek greatness -
but rather greatness sought them out, and aligned itself with them,
because of who they are.
They
elevated the human spirit, and more importantly, made those around
them better than they could be, by operating outside the "box" and
not being limited to environment, resources or popular or unpopular
modes of thinking.

Pantonic Steel Orchestra Connects with
UConn Steeldrums
Brooklyn, New York -
Stage side members of four-time New York
Panorama champions recently welcomed students with a penchant for pan
from the University of Connecticut (UConn), to their Brooklyn practice
room for a steelpan workshop. The structured session began with a
performance exhibition of Pantonic flagship selections including
Trini To the Bone, Celebrate and
Time After Time.
The students included Music Education majors and others
with an interest in music, all of whom were band members of
UConn Steeldrums. The inclement weather this past Saturday was no
match for the determination of the band members and their teacher, Dr.
Robert W. Stephens, to journey to Brooklyn, New York for the band's
first-ever steelpan workshop.

Pan Jazz Moves to
Uptown
Garvin Blake and
Friends to perform
at the Uptown Renaissance Restaurant
New York
- Pan
Jazz is moving uptown, literally, to the Uptown Renaissance
Restaurant in Harlem on Sunday May 1. Making the move for the
day, or rather the evening, are
Garvin Blake and Friends who received critical acclaim at
Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall on Father's Day last year and
wowed the audience with their performance.
Uptown Renaissance restaurant
opened its doors a little over a year
ago on April 9, 2004.
The
establishment astutely recognized the importance of their community,
and therefore remained sensitive to its needs. Subsequently
the Callistes have opted to carry on in the tradition of the
preceding establishment, and ensure that clientele from their
surrounding community continue to feel welcome, while simultaneously
catering to consumers from all areas.
