“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Gadsby-Dolly digs in on
pan payment |
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Despite calls from regional heads of Pan
Trinbago for Minister of Community Development,
Culture and the Arts Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly to get
the National Carnival Commission (NCC) to pay
panmen directly, she has not budged from her
position.
At present they are due to be paid their fees
for 2018 and outstanding prize money through the
organisation’s central executive.
Gadsby-Dolly said the situation with Pan
Trinbago is unfortunate, but the pan players are
not the only people owed.
She said: “It is much more complex than that.
The outstanding bills from Panorama 2018 are an
estimated $8 million over the Pan Trinbago 2018
allocation.

Boogsie Sharpe: The Legend
Trapped Between Reason and Reality
|
Global -
How many times has he heard the same review? He overarranges. He plays too many notes. He’s too jazzy. This is calypso—our music, they remind. And who are “they” but a bunch of amateurs strutting in his panyard a few nights before the 1987 North Zone steel band finals, running off at the mouth about his musical style. “Ay, Boogsie, you know what?,” they’d crow. “Maybe you could take this part out, put this one in and,... blah, blah, blah.” Such brass! Small wonder he escapes the din by hanging out his pride in the shadows of Phase II Pan Groove, his own big band of 100 players now rehearsing on gleaming chrome pans with steely tones. Here, amid the cacophony, he is secure. In the belly of the beast, Boogsie Sharpe, the world’s best panist-composer-arranger is home.

“Mr. Keith Diaz
(President of Pan Trinbago), is and has always
been a stranger to the truth” |
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. -
On Friday 18th May 2018, the same mob that
assaulted Attorney Farid Scoon at the
Communication Workers Union hall the day before,
invaded the head office of Pan Trinbago with
placards and shouting at the top of their voices
that the duly elected officers must vacate
office immediately. This interrupted a staff
meeting that was called by the office manager to
update them on the present situation in light of
all the misinformation that was going around.
The meeting although near its end, had to be
aborted, as the unruly mob went throughout the
office pounding on tables and kicking on doors
thereby disrupting the operations of the office
staff who felt very intimidated and was unable
to continue working until the police arrived.
This action also had a very negative effect on
the other tenants of the building, thereby
bringing the organization into public disrepute
and making our neighbors uneasy.

Central Executive of
Pan Trinbago appalled at attitude
displayed by members of its organization |
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - Saddening, Maddening and Frightening, is the only way to describe
the despicable behavior of a few regional officers and members of
Pan Trinbago Inc. T.C.,
who had gathered at the Communication Workers Union hall at the
behest of the
President Keith Diaz, on the evening of Thursday 17th May, 2018 to hold an illegal Special Convention to tinker with the Constitution of the Organization.
Arising out of a pending court matter, Attorney for the Executive Mr. Farid
Scoon went to serve on Keith Diaz, an injunction granted by Madam Justice Joan
Charles, advising that the meeting was illegal. Mr. Scoon came under attack and
was subjected to physical assault by an unruly mob to the extent of having beer
thrown on him.

Pan Trinbago Responds to: “TAKE PAN AWAY FROM PAN PLAYERS” |
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I. - Please allow me
space to reply to an article written in the
Daily Express by veteran journalist Keith Subero
on Monday 7th May 2018 titled ‘TAKE
PAN AWAY FROM PAN PLAYERS.’
Two calypsos keep bouncing
around in my head while trying to come to terms
with Keith’s comments. David Rudder’s “Mad Man’s
Rant” and Bro. Valentino’s “Barking Dogs”. The
words sounded like mad men in bags, madmen in
rags and madmen in their velvet gowns and suits
also.

Phase II gets new name
and new leader
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Phase II is now known as Hadco Phase II and
the band is now under new leadership.
Former Port-of-Spain Mayor Keron Valentine will
now take over the rein of leadership as the
band’s Executive Manager.
The changes were announced at a media launch on
Thursday in addition to plans to develop the
band’s space in Woodbrook, called The Village.
Speaking to Loop earlier this week, Valentine,
33, said one of his first acts was to
acknowledge Hadco’s support of the band through
the name change.
“They are a very special corporate sponsor. I
have worked with quite a number of other
corporate entities and they are into it. Most
corporate people just see it as the dollar
figure they put behind the steel pan but Hadco
cares about the wellbeing of the band and we
have a very close relationship with them and we
keep abreast of all the developments. When I
came on I was always hearing it is Phase II in
collaboration with Hadco but I told them we have
to acknowledge that it is a lot of resources,
financial and otherwise given to Phase II so we
need to re-launch and call the band Hadco Phase
11 Pan Groove,” he said.

NY Panorama: Embarrassing, Shameful, Thoughtless,
Bandits
|
New
York, USA - Well if you
haven’t heard already, New York’s 2017 Panorama
Steel Orchestra competition was an epic failure
for most. Unless you were the show’s promoters -
who got away as bandits in the night - except it
was a broad daylight-mugging with everyone watching.
Calling the promoters “bandits” is really a description
‘upgrade’ as they have been known as the original
Evil Empire to the Brooklyn Steelband community
for decades.
So in this
regard, let’s cut the crap! And the fake news from
those who are spreading alternative facts, about
how great New York 2017 Panorama was. In reality
it was jacked up.
