Pamberi Remembers Godwin Bowen

by Andre Moses

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - For each of those nine (9) original pieces, Bowen composed the song and the lyrics and also arranged both the calypso demo version and the Steelband Panorama version. The titles of the songs and the lyrics show an arranger and composer who had taken the time to observe and understand the Panorama tradition and the essence of its dynamic, in order to do justice to it in his music.

Pamberi is grateful for the opportunity that we had to partner with such a gifted and thoughtful musician....Godwin you did good, in fact you did better than good, and students of the steelband, its music and the Panorama tradition owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank you and Nuff Respect!   --  Andre Moses

Ontario, Canada - The sweet alluring sounds of a steel pan drums may remind you of a sandy beach, but they are much closer than you think.

In fact, thanks to PK Hummingbird Steel Orchestra, those sounds can be heard here in Thorold.

The group was formed in 1998 by Patrick Nunes and Kay Charles. Nunes supplied the steel pans and Charles led a youth group. Together they worked to connect young people to a vibrant part of the Trinidad and Tobago culture while engaging them in a positive activity.

The PK Hummingbird Steel Orchestra is open to youths aged nine to 14 and their families. The age limits can be flexible, Charles notes.

....Michael Mason joined the orchestra with members of his family in 2008.

He told his mother he wanted to learn about drums, but to his surprise it was steel pan drums.

“I gave it a shot and here I am 10 years later,” Mason said.

Navajo Nation Youth Perform with the Steelpan at Smithsonian

Twinning of Native American and Steelband Cultures

Navajo Nation Youth perform

Washington, DC - When Steel Talks took off down the I95 highway on a very special assignment. Today we would get to see, meet and hear the performance of a group of talented young people from the Navajo Nation - who among other things have incorporated the steelpan instrument as a major part of their repertoire. The name of their group is the Church Rock Academy Elementary School Steel Drum Band.

The group traveled from Gallup, New Mexico to the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC to be part of the museum’s performance events series, and performed in the Potomac Atrium, where native instruments, drums, percussions and Steelpan instruments were laid out and awaiting coming to life under the hands of the musicians. The young musicians from Church Rock Academy of the Navajo Nation gave a musical and ethnic insight into their cultural experience to the audience gathered for their performance at the National Native American Museum.

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Lasara Kalloo wants to be a musician and a veterinarian.

She already knows that she’ll have to dedicate a lot of time to learn about both fields.

After all, Lasara’s parents, Camille and Sherwin, always remind her that it’s possible to achieve anything once you’re a hard worker and patient.

So daily, you can find Lasara watching animal videos on YouTube or practising the four instruments she plays – the steelpan, drums, keyboards and recorder.

....Since Lasara started playing the steelpan in church, in 2016, she’s learnt to play gospel, pop, classical music and soca.

Steelpan genius: Anthony Williams... the making of a master

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - ....Anthony “Tony” “Muff-Man” “Skip” Williams–Sun Valley, North Stars and Pan Am Jet North Stars (PAJNS)–is the scientist supreme of tuning and creating pans. He was master arranger, composer, innovator, leader, and a man ascribed the title by many I spoke with as “genius of the steelband.”

For the generations whom we have robbed of the knowledge of Williams, let’s set down a few markers which tell the story of the man who developed, arguably, the greatest steelband yet to interpret the calypso, European classics, jazz, among other forms of music.

....In his time from the late 1940s through the 1950s into the 1960s as leader, arranger, composer, tuner and innovator, Muff-Man converted North Stars (it was first Northern Stars) into the celebrated Pan Am Jet North Stars, initiating steelband sponsorship.

....In the 1962 Music Festival at Queen’s Hall, Williams arranged, and with his band played the “Voices of Spring”, still considered one of the greatest of renditions of European classics by a steel band.

....Of the benefits received from its sponsorship by the American airline were the several flights made by the band through the Caribbean, the USA and South America, reaching as far as Argentina. In the 1960s, the band pioneered in touring and playing at historic halls such as Madison Square Garden and the Lincoln Centre in New York.

....Pan Am Jet North Stars music is recorded on three great albums: Trinidad’s Leading Steel Orchestra, Ivory and Steel (with Winifred Atwell) and Souvenirs in Steel. The piece I love most with Atwell is her composition, “Devil’s Daughter” with the pan arrangements done by Williams..

Amrit Samaroo - Standout Panist, Composer and Arranger Speaks

A When Steel Talks Exclusive

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Today, musician Amrit Samaroo is known for his sterling arrangements, especially with his band Supernovas Steel Orchestra, having taken them to second place in 2016, behind champions of that year Desperadoes Steel Orchestra - and before that - winning a championship with Supernovas in 2014 while in the small steel orchestra category. Antigua and Barbuda Cancels Carnival 2021

Antigua & Barbuda, W.I. - The decision that there will be no carnival in Antigua and Barbuda this year remains intact despite the recent gains made in the fight against the coronavirus.

The Minister responsible for national festivals, Hon. Daryl Matthew, told Pointe Xpress that Cabinet will not rescind the decision it made earlier this year to cancel the festival for a second consecutive season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“There will be no carnival or any activity that will involve large scale crowds in any one place,” Matthew said in response to queries about the summer festival.

He said there are ongoing ‘internal discussions’ around the issue, but Government remains resolute in the fight against COVID-19.

Winsford “Joker” Devine, the Bard of Trinidad

by Raffique Shah

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - I imagine that like me, most calypso aficionados first became aware of the existence of the late Winsford ‘Joker’ Devine when, in 1980, a virtually unknown calypsonian, ‘King’ Austin Lewis, emerged as a favourite for the calypso monarch title in his debut appearance, singing Devine’s record-breaking composition, ‘Progress’. The affable Austin didn’t win the title, running second to accomplished performer Lord Relator.

But ‘Progress’ shot to the top of the charts with its poetry-like construct and haunting melody, that made it so infectious, it triggered a musical pandemic long before we knew what a pandemic was.

Twenty years later, in the year 2000, ‘Progress’ was acclaimed the Calypso of the 20th Century across the world, wherever calypso was recognized as an important genre of music.
