Pamberi Remembers Godwin Bowen
by Andre Moses
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
For each of those nine (9) original pieces, Bowen composed the song
and the lyrics and also arranged both the calypso demo version and
the Steelband Panorama version. The titles of the songs and the
lyrics show an arranger and composer who had taken the time to
observe and understand the Panorama tradition and the essence of its
dynamic, in order to do justice to it in his music.
Pamberi is grateful for the opportunity that we had to partner with
such a gifted and thoughtful musician....Godwin you did good, in
fact you did better than good, and students of the steelband, its
music and the Panorama tradition owe you a debt of gratitude. Thank
you and Nuff Respect!
-- Andre Moses

PK Hummingbird Steel Orchestra looking for young people and
families to learn to play steel pan drums

Michael Mason, left, is a member of the PK Hummingbird
Steel Orchestra. Kay Charles, right, is one of the
co-founders of the group
Ontario, Canada - The sweet
alluring sounds of a steel pan drums may remind you of a sandy
beach, but they are much closer than you think.
In fact, thanks to PK Hummingbird Steel Orchestra, those sounds can be
heard here in Thorold.
The group was formed in 1998 by Patrick Nunes and Kay Charles. Nunes
supplied the steel pans and Charles led a youth group. Together they worked
to connect young people to a vibrant part of the Trinidad and Tobago culture
while engaging them in a positive activity.
The PK Hummingbird Steel Orchestra is open to youths aged nine to 14 and
their families. The age limits can be flexible, Charles notes.
....Michael Mason joined the orchestra with members of his family in
2008.
He told his mother he wanted to learn about drums, but to his surprise it
was steel pan drums.
“I gave it a shot and here I am 10 years later,” Mason said.

Looking back: Navajo Nation Youth Perform with the Steelpan at Smithsonian
Twinning of Native American and Steelband Cultures
Washington, DC - When Steel Talks
took off down the I95 highway on a very special assignment. Today we would
get to see, meet and hear the performance of a group of talented young
people from the Navajo Nation - who among other things have incorporated the
steelpan instrument as a major part of their repertoire. The name of their
group is the Church Rock Academy Elementary School Steel Drum Band.
The group traveled from Gallup, New Mexico to the National Museum of the
American Indian in Washington DC to be part of the museum’s performance
events series, and performed in the Potomac Atrium, where native
instruments, drums, percussions and Steelpan instruments were laid out and
awaiting coming to life under the hands of the musicians. The young
musicians from Church Rock Academy of the Navajo Nation gave a musical and
ethnic insight into their cultural experience to the audience gathered for
their performance at the National Native American Museum.

Lasara Kalloo, 10, puts in the hard work to become musician, vet
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
Lasara Kalloo wants to be a musician and a veterinarian.
She already knows that she’ll have to dedicate a lot of time to learn
about both fields.
After all, Lasara’s parents, Camille and Sherwin, always remind her that
it’s possible to achieve anything once you’re a hard worker and patient.
So daily, you can find Lasara watching animal videos on YouTube or
practising the four instruments she plays – the steelpan, drums, keyboards
and recorder.
....Since Lasara started playing the steelpan in church, in 2016, she’s
learnt to play gospel, pop, classical music and soca.

Steelpan genius: Anthony Williams... the making of a master
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. -
....Anthony
“Tony” “Muff-Man” “Skip” Williams–Sun Valley, North Stars
and Pan Am Jet North Stars (PAJNS)–is the scientist supreme of
tuning and creating pans. He was master arranger, composer,
innovator, leader, and a man ascribed the title by many I spoke
with as “genius of the steelband.”
For the generations whom we have robbed of the knowledge of
Williams, let’s set down a few markers which tell the story of
the man who developed, arguably, the greatest steelband yet to
interpret the calypso, European classics, jazz, among other
forms of music.
....In his time from the late 1940s through the 1950s into the
1960s as leader, arranger, composer, tuner and innovator,
Muff-Man converted North Stars (it was first Northern Stars)
into the celebrated Pan Am Jet North Stars, initiating steelband
sponsorship.
....In the 1962 Music Festival at Queen’s Hall, Williams
arranged, and with his band played the “Voices of Spring”, still
considered one of the greatest of renditions of European
classics by a steel band.
....Of the benefits received from its sponsorship by the
American airline were the several flights made by the band
through the Caribbean, the USA and South America, reaching as
far as Argentina. In the 1960s, the band pioneered in touring
and playing at historic halls such as Madison Square Garden and
the Lincoln Centre in New York.
....Pan Am Jet
North Stars music is recorded on three great albums:
Trinidad’s Leading Steel Orchestra,
Ivory and Steel (with Winifred Atwell) and Souvenirs in
Steel. The piece I love most with Atwell is her composition,
“Devil’s Daughter” with the pan arrangements done by Williams..
