San Jacinto College Central Steel Band

bio
The steel band is open to everyone. You donʼt need any musical experience, just a desire to learn.
The San Jacinto College Central (SJCC ) Steel Band is committed to furthering the art of the steel pan. In 2010 they commissioned Gary Gibson to compose a concert-length work, “In the Shadows of the Forest”. This historic work combines steel band and full choir. The libretto was created using elements of Trinidadian folklore.
The SJCC Steel Band also has many CDs available. You can find them on CD Baby and iTunes.
To date, over 400 students have been members of the steel drum ensemble. Theyʼve gone on to four-year colleges and pursued careers in teaching, television, radio, engineering, computer science, health sciences, finance…
The steel band, which plays a mix of genres, is one of many ensembles offered at San Jacinto College. It is a good fit in the music department because it helps students fulfill the performance requirement for degrees in music and in audio engineering. [Yes, it's true: San Jacinto College Central has a state-of-the-art recording facility.]
