History was made on Saturday, March 31st, 2007 as the
Miami University (MU) Steel Band and the Eastern Kentucky University
Steel (EKU) Band presented a joint concert at Hall Auditorium, on
the Oxford campus of the institution. The two bands, uniting
for the first time, performed a diversity of musical styles, with a
focus on original music for steel band.
Miami University Steel Band director Chris Tanner
offered several original compositions, including Emerald Isle
(a beguine), and Work It Loose,
a 12-bar blues featuring a horn section of two trumpets, alto sax,
and tenor sax. The bands also performed EKU director Jason Koontz's
arrangement of Gershwin's Summertime, as a mambo.
Compositions by Ray Holman, Tom Miller, Jeff Narell, and others were
also included in the set.
The culmination of the evening was a performance
of Len "Boogsie" Sharpe's panorama composition Fire Down
Below. The combined MU and EKU bands was one of the
largest steel band ensembles to be heard in Southwest Ohio.
On Tuesday April
3, 2007 the Eastern Kentucky University and Miami
University steel bands again came together - this time
on EKU's campus. The collaborative, free concert
was held in EKU's Brock auditorium and open to the
public.
The combined members of both schools
amassed a steel band comprised of over 50 members.
This collaborative concert was the first of its kind
in the state of Kentucky, in addition to
being
one of the largest steel
orchestra aggregations to ever perform in the area.
