New York-based soca
songster Choklet was
born in the twin-island
country of Trinidad
and Tobago. Choklet
migrated to the United
States where she pursued
her studies in nursing.
At an early age, her
family and friends recognized
her creative talents.
Choklet’s first album
Hot, generated
hits like
La Diabless, Soca to
Mambo, Lies,
and many more. Her single
Move followed,
and indeed had everyone
‘moving’ all over Europe
and the Caribbean. For
2004, Choklet delivered
Jook Na and in
2005 came
Miami Vibes,
still hitting the airways.
The songstress continued
to please, and in 2008
collaborated with Hayden
Lynch for the first
time on the track
Musical Invention.
The pair has joined
up again for Choklet’s
current release,
Children You Must Love
Your Mother.
Hayden Lynch
Originally from
Tunapuna in east
Trinidad, Lynch was
always influenced by
the soothing sound
of the steel pan,
and began playing at
the tender age of 9,
when his
appreciation for the
beautiful art form
took root. His first
experience with
calypso music came
when he played steel
pan with ‘Tunapuna Klondikes,’ staying
with the band for
three years before
moving on to ‘Delphoniks.’
In 1977 Lynch’s good
friend Elmuse took
him to play with
Desperados
Steel Orchestra,
which was to be the
musical experience
of his life. At the
time Desperadoes was
led by the late
Rudolph Charles with
the late great
arranger Clive
Bradley.
It was August 1991
when Lynch left
Trinidad to ‘spread
his horizon’ in the
United States, and
eventually connected
with New York’s
ADLIB Steel
Orchestra.
Upon meeting
arranger, George
“G-Money” Culmer,
Lynch’s musical
knowledge broadened,
growing to include
different genres of
music from R&B to
Jazz. He put out two
CDs - “Look At Life”
and “This One Is It”
- inspired by his
childhood, his
new-found
understanding for
music, and most
importantly his
lovely wife Vern,
who always stood by
his side.
