  Visit When Steel Talks

The late “Maestro” (Cecil Hume) is considered one of the originators  of Trinidad & Tobago’s music genre ‘Soca’ - along with calypsonians  Shorty (Ras Shorty I) and the Mighty Shadow, along with arrangers Ed Watson and Pelham Goddard.

“Maestro” began singing calypso in the 1960s and his many hits include but are not limited to ‘Tempo,’ ‘Fiery,’ ‘Savage,’ ‘Bionic Man,’ and the track featured here, Gold.  The latter was a 1976 tribute written in honor of Trinidad & Tobago’s gold medalist Hasley Crawford.

Cecil “Maestro” Hume was killed 30 August 1977 in Trinidad after being struck by a vehicle.

Gold is included in this season’s Panorama line-up because it is the tune of choice for Golden Hands Steel Orchestra for Panorama 2013.
